When Toronto media and bloggers get hooked on a player, you’d swear that said player is the next Wayne Gretzky.

They more often than not end up being bottom 6 guys, if they even have a career in the NHL.

It was Robertson for a few years, now it’s Knies.

Stephen Halliday is the next Dany heatley

I will say, credit where it’s due, Knies is a really fucking good player and a joy to watch. I haven’t watched enough of Halliday yet to comment, but I get the hype behind Knies.

But yeah it’s really common for their prospects to get drastically overrated. First it was Robertson, then Niemela and Hirvonen who have been mediocre since. Of them all, I’ve liked Knies the most though so I wouldn’t be shocked if he makes it big.

Sorry but Halliday literally looks 30 years old.

Such a weird take. Knies is overrated and everyone on the Leaf sub gets mad at me when I point out his flaws and statistical comparables, but prospects get overrated everywhere, and historically the Leafs have ended up giving away a lot of good ones for very little in return lol. I can’t really think of a time the Leafs gave up a hyped up prospect and clearly won the trade. Thinking about giving up a useful 3C, a recent first round pick, and a first rounder for a year and a change of a battered 31 year old Owen Nolan. They held onto Steen and Colaiacovo just long enough to trade them for Lee Stemoniak. They traded Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft. Best examples I can give you are Schenn for JVR, in which case Schenn had played four years in the NHL (longer than JVR!), and the WJHC probably helped sell DiDominico in the Versteeg deal, and you could argue Viktor Stahlberg brought more to the table anyway. Hell, I love Jake Muzzin, but the Leafs gave two guys who became useful young NHLers for him AND a first.

Just wait till Halliday put the clamps on Fantilli during the outdoor game in 2 weeks

  7. Melnykout

Knies also plays on the best team in the NCAA, Ohio is 7th right now but it’s interesting for sure how the sens always find these guys

  8. spartacat_12

Every team/fanbase inflates the value of their prospects. Toronto gets more airtime because of the market, but most knowledgeable hockey people are aware of the bias and don’t take it too seriously. It’s not like they’ve made any big trades involving prospects.

There’s also a big difference between a guy like Halliday, who isn’t even a top 10 prospect in the Sens’ system, and Knies, who is his team’s top prospect.

  9. slappedlikelobov

He’s not overrated. He’s just promising and fills an organizational weakness so it makes the news. Who knows how good he’ll actually be but if he can get into our top six then that’d be great. Good for him for choosing to stay in college instead of prematurely jumping to pro.

  10. Middle-Hair

Knies is a good prospect, but he’s starting to get massively overrated by both media and fans.

His numbers are good but not much better then last years numbers, was one of the older players in his draft year, and most of the projections realistically have him as a Nick Foligno style player if he hits. So a good player, but not some star in the making.

  11. Zoolake1

Looking forward to Justin Pogge’s imminent breakout year lol

  12. Josefstalion

Hallidays a PP merchant. Gets about half of his assists and 6/7 of his goals on the PP

  13. The thing is it’s because the Leafs usually don’t have bunch of decent prospects so they really only have the 1 maybe 2 to focus on. Whereas our drafting has been great and have lots of prospects to look at.

  14. CrankyLeafsFan

Yes. Knies is exciting. He scores lots of goals and many are highlights due to the skill or timing. I don’t even think they are similar players. Halliday (stats wise) looks like the prime setup guy.

Searching your sub, I don’t see a single fan taking the time to post Halliday highlights to get hyped about.

**All** Knies college goals are posted.

Our fans are rabid for TML material to the point that some fuckin guy can scream at a camera with our jersey on and get a career out of it.

  15. TheSens16

This dude was drafted last June, but he is only 6 months younger than Stutzle… It’s a man playing with teenagers.

  16. soupyc44

Goal scores are harder to fined therefore valued more

  17. Every team inflates their prospects worth. It’s called hype. And blame the media if you want to blame someone. They don’t shut up about anything.

  18. HumanSun1

and your point? both of them wont make it to the Nhl anyways

  19. Not to be that guy but Halliday was drafted as a double overager. He was eligible for the 2020 draft, which makes him a year farther into his development than Knies.
