Interesting enough idea, but you need to understand that time zones and travel exists.

  2. Reggae4Triceratops

Yeah lots of interesting match ups would occur if you ignored conferences. Truly groundbreaking stuff here.

There’s a decent argument against 1-16 for travel reasons but the current format needs to go.

  5. Don’t forget the Leafs lost a best of 5 to Columbus and choked a 3-1 series lead to Montreal. I’d prefer the 1 vs 8 format but let’s not pretend the format is the problem here.

2-3-2 will never fly as teams with home ice advantage will never get game 5 at home and could potentially play fewer home games than their lower ranked opponent.

So you’re wondering if the NHL would scrap conferences for the playoffs when they have resisted scraping the divisions?

I’ll eat my hat if that happens.

Personally I don’t give a shit about the playoff formats. Sooner or later you need to take care of everyone to be the last team standing.

    1to8

Travel issues with 1to16 and I think there’s some value in lightly partitioning the two conferences so the playoffs start with some familiarity, but the two teams in the final are somewhat of a mystery to each other and their fans. It would be weird for the Jays to be opening the first round against LA or MN.

At least we can agree that the current format is trash.

I’m not staying up to watch playoff games in Minnesota unless it’s in the final

Winning Stanley’s Cup is the hardest playoffs to win in all N. American sports for a reason… Gotta win 16 games before someone else does… And that’s REGARDLESS of what seeds you may play along the way. While 1-16 seeds sound interesting on paper (The media would have a frenzy with all that speculation), the travel issues would become annoying, ESPECIALLY with a 2-2-1-1-1 format, and I don’t wanna have to wait a day in between games 5,6, and 7 for travel allowances… Just actually BE the best team, regardless of opponent… « Just win, baby! »

Tampa is ahead of us in P%? God damn it, please Florida, beat them today.

  12. thepikemonhunter59

Funny enough, assuming all 8 top 8 teams win… we still get tampa in round 2 😂😂😂

  13. IntellectualFella

This set up works in the Q because the teams are fairly close overall, and not across a continent. 1-8 is perfect.

  14. The_Rolling_Stones__

31-13, with a record like that surely the leafs will get past first round. 😅

  15. NO_NAME_BRAN

I’m not really for 1-16 format given the time zone differences and travel issues. But it should definitely be East and West 1-8 seeding because there is largely no timezone issue.

  16. CynicalBite

Doesn’t matter. You gotta beat the best to be the best. Bring it on Bruins, Canes.

  17. FatStupidOldMan

In my view. The format is irrelevant. The Leafs need to learn and overcome teams like Boston and Tampa. Dubas, for all his wisdom, has committed to “staying the course”.

We’re at the point now where, sure… maybe there’s some tooling to do and staying the course if fine. But if the team doesn’t bust out of the first round… I absolutely believe one of the core is going… and Dubas will as well.

Of course, my assumption is the people Dubas answers to want playoff success, not just regular season success.

  18. For travel reasons I’d still do 1-8 in each conference but I don’t deny this is technically the most fair. It would potentially punish 1st place teams if the worst team is on the other side of the continent. Why make them suffer for travel haha. But yes I agree the current system sucks. Bettman is a donkey

  19. DangleWho

We lost the right to complain about not getting an easy first round opponent

  20. Do the « draft your opponents » thing. Gimmicky, but puts (high seed) teams in control of their own travel and game times, while still having high vs low seed be a thing

  21. IAmTheBredman

The league will never go for this because the travel creates so many issues. The players are now enduring significantly more travel and time zone changes, the audience has to deal with time zone changes one way or the other, the environmental impact of thr flying is not only bad, but it’s a bad look for the league (this is something F1 is getting a lot of heat over recently)

  22. dkfraser

And the leafs lose to the wild in 7 games…

  23. Curious, under the current format and current standings, who do the Leafs face?

  24. thezodiacbiller

One to eight by points percentage would have the Leafs as the fifth seed and playing the fourth seed (Tampa) lol. If you look every year, most matchups wouldn’t change. 1-16 will never happen because of travel, and anyway, they don’t and can’t play a balanced schedule because of how geographically far reaching the league is. East and West point totals don’t necessarily reflect quality if the bottom or top of one conference is significantly better or worse (tho I do think this year that the East is a much better conference).

  25. Acrobatic_Law5598

    1-8 conference just makes sense

  26. If we had the old format and the playoffs started today, the Leafs would be playing the Rangers.

Knowing our luck, when the league finally changes the format, Leafs will not make the playoffs that year.

  27. NotFuckingTired

Ignoring all the bad parts of this, I don’t mind the thought of facing the Oilers in round 1.

  28. WigginsEnder

1-16 is what I prefer. But I’d settle for 1-8 because I’m sure that’s the best the NHL could do
