1. The Islanders wouldn't have made the trade unless they thought they could sign him. If he's good at face offs, the penalty kill, the power play, and defense, it's sounds like they're getting a poor man's Bryan Trottier

  2. Lou knew the number before making this trade. Would have made no sense to make it not knowing that to re-sign bo. I don't like lou's method of thinking old school hockey wins today but he is saavy enough to know how this worked before making the deal. His track record shows he gets his ufa's signed to market value with a lot of term. And bo was only re-signing if isles gave him his market worth of 8×8.5 with the extra year isles could add once they got his rights. Now with bo secured i see one more move before tdl. Hopefully another top sixer who can play on a line with bo/barzal can be acquired. Or see if lou can make bailey disappear. A top sixer – bailey makes forward ranks much better. And roughly $5.3 mill. in cap space to work with.

  3. Hey Gil it’s def a big relief and as gd day for Isles. I was confident but did not like the possibility being there for not resigning. Phew 😅. This could lead to other talent wanting to join in future and hopefully change the perceptions a bit.

  4. Another move Just to make a playoff push. Lou sucks. I want a cup! Not a first round flop against the bruins.

  5. The NHL all star game sucks. The 3 v 3 is boring. I never watch that filth. NHL spends too much time pushing gay flags.

  6. Horvat has proven he loves the game by playing hard game after game. He's also proven he wants to continue to improve because he has hired coaches to help with his skating and hired Oates to help with his positioning to score more goals.
Right now it is a bit of an overpay, but not a whole lot for a guy who is having back to back 30+ goal seasons. I am surprised he didn't get an NTC. Most players with families want that stability. Maybe those details come out later?
That 25% retained cap is so Lou can acquire another top player. There's no other reason to do that on an expiring contract. Lou dumped Beau in this deal, perhaps he dumps Bailey in the next. Josh has fallen off a cliff. I think the Isles best chip they would consider parting with might be Mayfield. He chews up minutes and would fit under any cap.

  7. This year the actual games were good to watch, but the skills circus was horrible and often had me cringing.

  8. The Nelson, Lee, Palms line has been on fire. I hope Lane leaves it alone for the rest of the year. The worst thing he could do is start the line blender up again. Just concentrate on getting the Barzal line and Pageau line going.

  9. I have the NHL streaming package, and since the Canucks have been a tire fire this year (AND ONLY THIS YEAR 😅) I’m going to be watching the Isles game tonight to see my guy play. You might have a more regular fan on your hands, dudes. I’m too young to be mad about 1982 still, so as long as it’s not the rangers, no reason why I can’t cheer for a NY team. Take care

  10. This should have happened 2 years ago. But now is the time to make it count. Luckily it's only 2 points. Hopefully Lou is not done! Plenty dead weight to move. They either want to make an honest run for it, or they'll lay down and die. Im willing to take that chance. Because the same old crap the last 4 is unexceptable. This organization needs to stop the Bullsh!t.

  11. Not sure how with the salary situation but they could use one more forward I just hope it doesn’t include mayfield if they pull something off because I like him. Great news that Hovart signed the contract.

  12. If we were basing the contract on an 80s style game, the contract is too expensive. But hockey in 2023 is more than goals and assists, especially one season with a lot of goals. Bo can do everything. He can score, he can pass, he's an asset on the power play in the bumper position, he can back check, hits, wins face-offs and never gives up on a play. You don't pay someone big money just for goals and points – unless you're the Canucks, who gave the defensively challenged JT Miller a huge contract after one 99 point season at age 29. As a Canucks fan, you guys got the better player. He'll never hurt you when he's on the ice. He's just reliable in all areas of the game and doesn't take stupid penalties. If you want to be the Rangers in the early 2000s and just stock up on guys with big scoring resumes, be my guest. But history has shown that hockey is more than that. Obviously Lou, like the fans, are frustrated with the fact that salaries have gone through the roof while the cap has stayed flat. But look across the table at those GM meetings, Lou. They're the ones responsible. The reason Pettersson and Boeser got the money they did was because Minnesota gave Kaprizov a big contract. That set the market price for everyone. He's a great player, but there's a cap for a reason. It's not there so you can pay the top guys whatever they want and you basically have to fill out the roster with borderline NHLers. Given the market, it's a more than fair deal for Bo. I'd rather have Bo at 8.5 than JT Miller at 8 until the end of time. You guys ended up with the better player, long term and short term.

  13. Horvat was looking for more than Miller ($8m x 7). I would say he got that and then some ie. extra year. Reason Canucks had to let him go. Bo is a leader, good at face offs and plays 200ft game. But lately his 200ft game has taken step back in favour of more goals. What concerns me is Horvat has always been 50-60pt. Does Lou think Bo is going to score 35 goals. He might but he’s not young anymore. The most concern I have is Horvat is shooting 2.9 shots pg or > 25% which is unsustainable. Normal shooting is < 10%. So he’s not going to score 50 goals. And I disagree, skating skills or speed is the one attribute that leads to a longer shelf life in the NHL. That’s why players focus on conditioning. Prime example Sedins.

  14. Hey, that Grabner reference was a low blow! I’m still bitter about the Ballard trade! 😂😂

  15. Hi Gil! Listen—I’ve trashed Lou the last 2 years—-however better late than never! He acquired our team an excellent player who wanted to be here—-I will take my hat off to him. Lou does not want to be remembered at the end of his career like this—-I feel he will make another significant deal and we will be in trouble for a future stretch to come with lack of picks. However boys—-bubble or no bubble——Isles get Tarasenko—-no one will want to play us. I can see Mayfield going the other way—-Bolduc will take his place ready or not. Boys—this is not in the best Interest of the future but we have something to play for! $$$ will free up soon—-Clutter and Bailey next year—-Varly 5m will go bye bye or cut in half—-Sorokin must be signed but maybe that Cap is extended by a lot in the near future——Boys if we can have a spot by the deadline—-we get a significant offensive player——we’re gonna make some ass kicking noise. Boston? Well I don’t care—-we have nothing to lose against them or anyone else for that maybe. Think the Bruins look forward to playing an Isles team with Bo—maybe Tarasenko and Sorokin? I highly doubt it——-LGI. Ps—Gil I feel you carried yourself with class in the “Never Say Die” podcast. If I lived my life like that—-I’d jump off a building——you were pure class my friend!

  16. It's true that the Isles have 17 million + tied up in 2 players, but the Leafs have $40m tied up in 4 players…and are doing just fine (in the regular season). Having one more top end forward, whether that be the progression of Wahlstrom (Maggio?) or from outside the team is the next step
