  2. I’m still on the keep Demko train and hope he rebounds.

Having to watch 2 AHL goalies hurts to think about.

  3. skorvat

If they play Demko again this season, it will be an auditioning for other teams. My guess is that he gets moved closer to the draft as long as he can get games in.

  4. emptyhoods

He’ll be moved at the very last hour of the deadline. Big ticket asset.

  5. Tracktoy

With his injury history, if the team can, they should move him, in my opinion.

As others have stated… the list of goalies with cups in the last 15 years is littered with names no one rates and there are many notable omissions.

I hope he rebounds, and he has (had) the potential to be truly elite. But im not sure I would invest my $$$ in that potential.

  6. MikaelDerp

It would be insane if Rutherford traded Demko for the lols then quit a few hours later.

  7. unbannedcoug

Trade em all I want a full rebuild that we deserve This is what happened about a decade ago or so with the 2011 core This core has imploded

  8. NerdPunch

If Demko is traded, I have tunnel vision on LAK. Kings could extend Quick on a cheap veteran deal and run a really solid tandem for like 7 million.

On the flipside, Vancouver can take on Cal Petersens contract as a 2 year cap dump. Sign a cheap vet like Reimer to a 2 year deal. Run a mediocre tandem like that during your “major surgery”, and try to develop Silovs/other goalies during that time.

Then basically figure out what combination of prospects/picks it’s going to take to get that deal done. Something like:

    **Kings**
    – Thatcher Demko

    **Vancouver**
    – Cal Petersen
    – Brandt Clarke
    – Turcotte/Laferriere
    – Draft Pick(s)

  9. Extra-Cap2029

He’s on a great contract. Sell him before it’s an actual sell low and trust in your system to produce another goalie by the time we try to peak our re-tool.

  10. randomj77

LA makes so much sense they have tons of RHD prospects and we could get an absolute haul for trading him in division

  11. typeronin

We’d need to get some kind of goalie prospect back in return, right?

  12. AnonymousBayraktar

Didn’t the Canucks let Markstrom walk to a divisional rival so we could keep Demko?

If the Canucks now unload him somewhere else, that’s yet another big screw up in my opinion. As for rumors of him being unhappy here: At this point, I’m so tired of the drama that I’m like: too fuckin bad. You get paid millions to play a game in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Our team also let the other guy walk so we could keep you. Suck it up.

  13. darth_senpai90

I mean if we are tanking and rebuilding fuck it trade everyone except Petey and Hughes.

  14. JTMilleriswortha1st

    Fuck it trade everybody

  15. PaperMoonShine

If you have a chance to trade Demko for another first rounder and a defence prospect, to replace him with Jarry in FreeAgency, you do it 100%.

  16. For everyone advocating for a tear down, here it is!

  17. TortelloniMarinara

If the team can get a satisfactory return for him I’d be on board… wouldn’t have said that last summer.

A couple of issues with Demko, bit of a wall coming up.

Assuming he gets back to playing even just a bit below bubble Demko he will hurt the tank. Think for a second about what would’ve happened this year if Demko was playing well and didn’t get injured… we would be in or around a playoff spot. Would Horvat be traded? Would he have been signed to a monster contract already? Would management have used Horvat as our own ‘rental’ and tried to sign him after the season?

The Canucks being terrible this season and not getting constantly bailed out by either Demko or previously Markstrom has laid bare how seriously awful the team defense is. I think this is a good thing, would rather get exposed and bottom out now than have our team’s ceiling be like the ‘pretending’ Predators and get bounced in the 1st round consistently. But here in lies the problem, if Demko returns to his great form as everyone hopes he will then our tank gets hurt not just this year but next year too.

Looking beyond the next couple years to when we hopefully are in the place to be a consistent playoff team Demko is now on the last year of his deal and turning 31. His contract and age doesn’t work with our team’s current cycle whatsoever.

Obviously the team knows better than us (I would hope) about Demko’s health. But I can’t help feeling some heebie jeebies thinking Demko might become the next Cory Schneider…

If management wants to have strong goaltending next year in hopes of being a competitive team I wonder if they could move demko either now or at the draft and then bring home local boy Tristian Jarry in free agency.

There’s ties not only to Vancouver as a local product but also to management as the ones who drafted and signed him in Pittsburgh.

This would make a lot of sense to me.

  19. Send_me_beer1

theres something funny about committing to the tank the year connor fucking bedard is up and it being too late to realistically have a shot at drafting him

  20. ImAnAfricanCanuck

I would look at Buffalo. We could acquire Anderson (who theyve tried to move, and is an amazing leader, could be our backup next season) and try to acquire their Swedish NCAA goalie Eric Portillo who they tried to move at the draft. It’s clear he isnt going to sign there with UPL being their next starter for the next decade. We could easily convince him to join the most popular NHL team in Sweden (Canucks), and Clarke could map out a development path with him that convinces him he can be a starter here.

I’m not sure what other pieces would be at play here but this would allow the Sabres to get into the playoffs this year and next year, and gives UPL more run way to learn his craft. Demko’s cap hit is not crippling to them and theyre already going to lose Portillo and Anderson either this offseason or next offseason.

Portillo might be one of the best goalie prospects outside of Cossa, and Askarov. The kid hasnt posted a sub .900 sv% (with at least 5 games played), since 15-16, and even in that same season he posted a .935 in a different league.

  21. This sub generally loves the backup more than the starter.

    We have two now!

  22. ktbffhctid

I love the guy, but cash him in.

We have the best goalie coach in the league.

  23. SoExcited_1

If you consider the facts that we have zero goal tending prospects in the system and drafting one, as much as we need one, wouldn’t help any time soon. Losing Demko would be a bad idea. We’d just end up over paying for one in free agency.

  24. dIbodIb

Teams that need goaltending seek goaltender, shocking news

  25. eexxiitt

Smart move by the other GM’s and an excellent opportunity to buy low on a starting goalie (Vezina candidate according to Canuck fans 1 year ago), in the prime of his career, at a fair cap hit, and coming off of an injury.

  26. Horvat53

I like Demko, his contract was good value, the injuries are concerning. I am conflicted on moving on from him, but if the team is concerned about his health, it’s the right thing to do.

  27. rangers9458

Who is the source? Media makes up 95% of this ishit and then we get to yack about it.

  28. scheng924

Remember when Vancouver used to be called a goalie graveyard?
