Pretty sure we drafted Eemeli Rasanen with that pick

  2. CoolBeansMan9

If anyone is curious, the 2nd was used to take 6’7 defenceman Eemeli Rasanen, who currently plays in the SWE-1 league after a rather good year in Denmark last year.

5 games for the Marlies in 2018-19 with 1 assist.

Just seeing Matt Frattin’s name gives me flashbacks.

  4. TTT64yoyo

To be fair, everyone else drafted after rasanen has also been quite meh

  5. JamesCurtis24

Seems like everybody lost that deal.

Truly one of the most trades of all time

These types of trades don’t happen so often anymore. 5 assets going out and coming in. I remember Lou traded like a bunch of assets to the islanders to essentially open up contract spots on the team too. It’s very old school.

This was such a great day! I celebrated seeing dion leaving more than most!

Getting rid of Phaneuf was its own reward here.

Big ol bag of nothing for both sides.

Absolute slam dunk of a trade. Getting rid of Phaneuf’s contract (a contract that was later bought out by LA) and getting a second round pick back was great value. Too bad Rasanen didn’t turn out but still a great trade for the Leafs. Greening had a handful of games where he looked decent in front of the net and I still kind of feel bad for Michalek. Lou shipped Michalek to the minors and his career was over shortly after if I recall correctly.

This trade is what makes me believe Karlsson can be traded in season this year.

  13. Total-Deal-2883

It was a trade, that’s for sure.

I’ve always felt bad for Dion, even when I expressed frustration with him.

He was a decent player, just not in the role he was put into. He shouldn’t have been captain and shouldn’t have been relied on to do as much as was asked of him.

A bit like Kessel in my opinion. A next level goal scorer who was expected to be a two way player and carry much of the team. It wasn’t in his dna.

Only 7 years ago? I feel like I’ve lost years of my life during Covid….you could have said this trade happened 15 years ago and I wouldn’t have questioned it.

Matt Frattin should get his jersey retired… his missed breakaway solidified the curse

  17. Kaladin-of-Gilead

Dion would go on to put up 46 points in 3 seasons with the sens, then get traded to the kings where he’d put up 16 points accross two seasons before retiring

Cody Donaghey is playing in austria

Casey Bailey played 7 games with the sens and is now in DEL

Frattin never played for the sens and ended up in Austria where he has 22 points in 37 games

Ryan Rupert never played in the nhl but is currently in the ECHL with 64 points in 70 games

Michalek played 18 games for us before going to the marlies then retiring

Greening played 30 games with us then retired in with the marlies

Tobias Lindberg played 6 games with us and is currently playing in Czech, currenty has 9 points in 27 games

Jared Cowen was bought out by us then retired.

  18. Kaladin-of-Gilead

It’s wild that dion got 7 million and an ntc from nonis

Like for the modern day team thats roughly the equivlant to giving Conor Timmins 7 million.

  19. LeafsRealist

I remember waking up to this and jumping up and down on my bed in pure exuberance.

  20. MrCeaseBreeze

Wow 7 years ago today eh? So much has changed since.

  21. LengthinessObvious81

Phaneuf was actually pretty decent in that 2017 Sens playoff run

  22. Appropriate-Dog6645

If I don’t remember those players traded for dion. I would think leafs lost this trade
