An interesting point I thought of here too.

What if Leafs trade for Meier, and work out some deal under the table where they re-sign him, pay out X amount of money in his signing bonus, then trade him.

So basically, the team signing him will be getting him at the price they agreed to with him, but we save them some money by essentially paying the signing bonus. That could net us more than what we initially gave up.

I’d be upset if we *hadn’t* considered it. I hope Dubas and co are considering every option that’s out there, but in the end I think he’ll go to a team with more room to resign him (New Jersey). Doesn’t mean Friedman can’t harvest some clicks from it, that’s how the sports news business works.

The fact that his RFA rights have value and you can at least recoup some of the cost to acquire him is interesting and something I hadn’t thought of before.

Dubas doesn’t have the balls to make moves like this unfortunately, we know how he operates

I think Meier is a fantastic piece to get, but man the price it’s going to cost vs the price his qualifying is just don’t at all seem appealing to me, we’re going to have to give up our first + a good prospect (probably Knies) for Meier, hope he’s the missing piece we need for a deep cup run, and then pray that we can trade him?

I genuinely don’t see how we can sign yet another 10 million dollar player, we’ll have 4 players making over 10 million on our team one of which is up for contract negotiations July 1st (so is Nylander btw) I genuinely don’t see how this is the right piece for the price being asked, if we can get him for a cheap price then sure but I genuinely think if we’re willing to give up a first + knies, it should be for someone that’s going to dress up in a leafs outfit October 1st and doesn’t cost over 10 million

Sounds like Friedman is suggesting that there are X dollars on the table and they’ll see who gets it between Nylander and Meier based on this years playoffs.
