Couldn’t afford him, out of the teams that are gonna do some things in the playoffs, none of them had the cap room. No one‘s gonna get rid of two or three guys just to cover half of his cap hit. He knew this, everyone knew it. Half of 7.5 million versus half of 10.5 million, probably the same level of offense at the moment…

Kane as a UFA in the Spring will certainly be interesting. Dude doesn’t want/need the money anymore imo. Wouldn’t surprise me if he takes a lowball salary to play with a good team for a chance at another cup. I would argue he still has lots to offer, his stats last year were great but then Debrincat was traded. He seems to just not care this year, dejected even.
