I could be wrong, but I would say it’s in regards to Bally Sports going bankrupt. Would be nice if the NHL would make the hometown teams games more accessible.

« We know Bally Sports is facing a pending bankruptcy and we have decided to just blackout all markets so that is fair. We will no longer be supporting anyone watching TV. We have been progressively moving towards this and the bankrupcy is the catalyst we needed to push us all the way. We hope to keep our fans happy as we continue to restrict their viewing enjoyment. Thank you,

    NHL »

I wish this were « We realize our deal with RNSs has been absolutely fucking our fanbase for years and we’ve decided to do something about it »

…but it isn’t and never will be

  4. tobysicks

Let me watch local games on ESPN+

  5. xDANxxTHExxMANx

    RSN = regional sports network
Your local sports television network channel. (Bally sports – formerly fox sports)

  6. Alien_Cats

Just not your local teams. You’re still screwed on that.

  7. snark_enterprises

    Inappropriate touching or bankruptcy

  8. moose4030

Avalanche fans have entered the chat

Just the biggest story in hockey that nobody is talking about.

  10. StraightDiscussion83

Should be able to purchase a team package. Watch all of your teams games

  11. someredditrando

Oh did they blackout the statement too?

  12. Pilz719

Would be nice to be able to watch my local hockey team…

The fact that the background is set in black is ironic

Man I have never had a problem with Bally lol besides signing back into my tv provider every time.

  15. The gist of it is that Bally’s Sports (they are a Regional Sports Network aka RSN ) who has licensed the rights to show NHL games in 12 (15 if you include Affiliates) different NHL team networks has stop paying their licensing fees. Bally’s are looking to possibly file bankruptcy. If that occurs, they will no longer be able to do the production of NHL games and therefore the games would no longer be available to watch as the RSN’s are the ones that provide the production value for on-air [live] games.

  16. RustyKarma076

Bally is going under and NHL will need a way of broadcasting games if they go.

  17. not_taylorswift1213

I live 7 hours away from Denver and I’m still blacked out from the avs

  18. insert-originality

Almost the same statement MLB made about the Bally situation. They better have something good because those markets are gonna be fuuuuucked.

  19. Falcon3492

RSN- Regional Sports Networks. Bally and AT&T sports are in danger of going bankrupt and the NHL will start streaming the games if that should happen. Why the NHL could not of come out and just said Regional Sports Networks is beyond me! Perhaps they don’t want people to know they hitched their wagon to two networks that nobody wants to watch.

  20. AnchorsAweigh89

In lieu of televised game coverage, we will be providing crayon drawings of key plays from the games to keep you in the loop!

    RSN’s are totally confusing.
I hate them, they have totally fragmented the league’s viewership. Let’s see is it on ESPN+, nbcsn, att, sports net or tnt? What do you mean it’s blacked out?!?

That said, a Bally’s bankruptcy doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going tits up and walking away from NHL contracts. Unless the point of Bally’s prospective bankruptcy is to unwind its business rather than reorganize, it will not want to lose its relationships with the teams, which are the core of the operation.

Rather, a bankruptcy enables Bally’s to renegotiate their NHL contracts. It’s a big FU to fans, but makes good financial sense from a financial perspective.

  23. OLPopsAdelphia

Ok, NHL, take us all into the digital age, pay one price, no blackout games, and I’ll be the first to buy in!

  24. PreDatOr1998___

I need to ELI5 me the blackout stuff that’s going on with games

  25. blueshirt11

What if, now hear me out, we have just a hockey channel? That’s it just hockey. Like real hockey at night. Slapshot after the game. Saturday mornings could have Mighty Ducks and Miracle on Ice. Friday night, get a pizza and beer and watch Goon with the boys. Sprinkle in some Letterkenny and Shorsey.

    Whaddaya think?

  26. TittyTasslesAndTacos

I would pay for a streaming service that only played NHL games. Why don’t they want my money.

  27. Numbnuts007

All I want to be able to do is as a Tampa Bay native be able to watch every single lightning in a season. Is that too much to ask?

  28. Not just the Bally Sports channels, but also the AT&T Sportsnet channels (which cover Las Vegas & Pittsburgh) are in trouble.

C’mon Gary Bettman, allow in-market streaming! You can redeem yourself for 3 labor stoppages during your tenure!
