    > The Wild acquired center Ryan O’Reilly from St. Louis in exchange for forward Josh Pillar. St. Louis retained half of O’Reilly’s salary. Minnesota then traded O’Reilly to the Maple Leafs in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft. Minnesota retained 25% of O’Reilly’s remaining salary.

Oh wow that article was a rollercoaster. So we essentially traded Pillar for a 4th. Wild

Good bye Wild legend, Ryan O’Reilly!

  4. McPuckLuck

For 1 brief second, we had a legit 1C.

I really wish the Wild were in on oreilly back before buffalo

I honestly don’t think 2M is worth a fourth round draft pick in two years. What a waste.

  6. Cap space for draft capital. I dig it

  7. This says that Guerin has checked out on this season and is just banking on the future.

Edit: Can anyone make this make sense? If I understand this correctly, we just paid $2M and Traded a player for a 4th round pick?

We are selling!!!! Hell yeah Billy, retain that salary for futures

« what was your favorite O’Reilly moment on the Wild? »

    « I kinda liked them all »

So this seems stupid to me no? Roughly $2mil for a 4th round pick in 2025?

  11. Just curious: do you have to be cap compliant at every moment during the regular season or is the cap checked at a fixed time of the day and you can go overcap as long as it’s not that time (for example mid way through a three or more team trade)?

Josh pillar (late round pick who was a bit vaguely interesting but had some mysterious injury and hasn’t played since) + like 1.5 MM that Billy wasn’t doing anything with has been spent to get a 4th round pick.

Most likely a pretty irrelevant move for the Wild but seems like a good deal for the Blues and Leafs both. We’re just happy to be involved I guess, idk.

  13. Doing this to acquire Auston Matthews, obviously.

Utilizing the cap space makes sense. Use it or lose it. Whether they should have gotten more than a 2025 4th is arguable.

OH OH OH….25% OF O’REILLYS SALARYYYYYYYY

  16. There’s gotta be more to come…right? Right?

At first I thought they were just trading cap space for a pick which I was ok, but giving up Pillar AND cap space for what will probably be a late 4th rounder makes no sense to me. I know Pillar isn’t a high tier prospect, but come on man.

  18. Clocking out for the night but will be furiously checking Russo & Smith’s Twitter in the morning for other moves.

  19. sedgymon

25% of his remaining cap hit for the year.. it’s like 70k relax

  20. Radagastdl

Well its a free 4th round pick. I will take it

Not that I care about Craig Leopold’s money but I was confused why he would be ok with Guering spending millions of dollars on what amounts to basically a do-over on a 4th round pick (pillar was a 4th too).

When you think about it tho, O’Reilly actually makes 6mm this year (less than his 7.5 cap hit) and 75% has already been paid (we’re 3/4 thru the season). So there’s 1.5 left to be paid and blues retained half of that, leaving 750k the wild retained half of – or in other words 375k of actual real money that leopold is paying to let Billy have a do over on his 4th round pick from a couple years back, which makes a lot more sense.

Edit: I screwed up we’re actually only 2/3 thru the season I guess so it’s a little bit more but you get the idea.

Someone explain this trade to me like I’m five…
