Nothing went right tonight. That dude was a brick wall. Passes weren’t crisp, and even the ice fucked them. Igor just hasn’t been right.
Just a reminder that last year, from 3/10-4/3, in a 9 game stretch, Igor Shesterkin had a .886 save percentage. As it turns out he was more than fine in the playoffs.
Just keep that in mind when panicking about his last 5 games.
Bleh. Put this behind us and move on to a new 7 game winning streak.
Winnipeg played terrific defense–disrupting passes, blocking shots, etc. The Rangers had a ton of shots, but only a handful of chances stand out in my mind as « damn, that *really* should have gone in. » Not really a lot of quality scoring chances–lots of shots right into the chest or the pads.
And Igor was not on his A-game, but honestly until the fourth goal, none of those goals registered as particularly soft to me. The first was a deflection off of a knee right in front of the net, the second was off a really slow rebound with someone right there to put it in, and the third was off a turnover in the zone. The defense certainly did not do him any favors tonight–they were slow and they were sloppy.
Hopefully the extra day of rest will do them some good, because they looked pretty gassed out there tonight.
That’s hockey, Suzyn
I’m not gonna harp on it too much sometimes you just get goalied
Frustrating loss where we played pretty well but got goalied and Igor let the boys down. Can’t win em all, and I always feel like the first home game after a long west coast road trip is usually a letdown. That being said, Igor’s simply gotta be better. The defense hasn’t really been helping him, but he’s let in 4 goals in his past few starts, that’s not good.
Some of y’all need to cool it with the doom and gloom in the game thread though lmao. We go on a 7 game winning streak and a 10 game point streak, and some folks here are ready to jump off a bridge after the first frustrating regulation loss we’ve had in over a month. 🤷♂️
Shit. Bullshit. Fuck.
Can Trouba throw another helmet to hype up Igor
Fuckin’ *love* Shesterkin but at the same time, his head doesn’t seem to be in it most of this season and that’s the plain truth. Having a child can certainly pull your attention away from the focus needed to be a top-flight goalie.
PP1 also needs to try and force 20 foot passes through more sticks and skates, it just might work the thirtieth time!
But what’cha gonna do. Hellebuyck does this sometimes and looks like the best goalie ever invented.
I agree with Steve, Shesty has to play his way out of this. We got a couple days off now, he can sit with Benny and get back on track.
As I said in the other thread, we’re 2 points behind where we were at this point last year.
We didn’t crash the net as much as we should have this game. They’re giants. Hellebuyck is massive.
Also, our shot % isn’t great overall this season. It’s not all on Igor.
Shesterkin better spend a lot of 1 on 1 time the next 2 days with Allaire.
This game reminds me of the Rangers before the helmet throw. We don’t want that version the Rangers
Igor needs to get his shit together.
50 fucking shots and 1 goal is embarrassing. What’s worse is the goaltender who was nearly unbeatable last year has been average the entire season, and the past couple weeks has been downright bad. 2.55 and .914 with ONE shutout (in November) coming into tonight. Those are not good numbers for the reigning Vezina winner and it needs to change *fast* or Moneypuck will be right again and the Rangers will once again be watching the SCF from home.
You guys can stick your fingers in your ears and lalalalala all you want, but Igor’s been average for 4+ months now and no amount of comments saying “get ‘‘em next time it happens he’ll snap out of it soon LGR!” will change that
Is anyone else concerned about Igor? In his last 5 games now he’s posted a sub .900 save percentage.
I’ll give Bowness this. He knows his team can’t go toe to toe on talent and that any run and gun game puts them at a disadvantage so he designed a system that’s tailored to his team. The Jets are just concede 2/3 of the ice but clog the middle, daring us to take low danger shots or try to force it through 3 guys for a good chance and with Hellebuyck as your tendy that’s a good bet to make. There forwards close quick too so you have to make a play fast or you’re getting stick lifted or poke checked from behind. It’s dangerous way to play but when it works it’s incredibly hard to beat. Tonight, we couldn’t beat it and that’s going to happen. We’ll have to learn how to beat systems like this before April and I’m sure that’ll be the subject of future practices. For now though it’s just a bad night and we’re going to regroup and focus on Detroit. Take the next 2 days to breath, refresh from the road + this battle of a game, and refine out the overall play. We’ll be fine, we’ll get more points and wins, and a new winning streak will form. On to Thursday.
Maybe Shesty is dealing with the shits like Samsonov lol
Igor has the worst GAA of the top 4 teams in our division
Not sure how everyone feels about Shesterkin but i feel a lot more concerned by defense as a whole. No problem getting stonewalled by Hellebyck tonight but we go down each game early by multiple goals from turnovers and not being able to get it out of the zone.
How can Winnipeg be 2nd in their division? They were terrible.
Shooting directly into the chest of a guy who is 6’4″, 210Lbs also counts as a shot on goal, I guess.
Jets gave game to their goalie to win. He challenged shooters, while teammates covered the other players. Classic
i just want kravstov traded and lesychyn waived so we have cap space for kane at this point
Hellebuyck had a 3.93 goals saved above expected in this game. 2nd highest of any game this season by any goalie
this is what it was like to face igor last year.
This must be what it felt like when other teams faced Igor (and Hank) at their best
Now we can go about trying to predict the lines for Thursday
Well that was an experience.
Classic definition of being goalied. Hellebyuck stood on his head tonight and we couldn’t get shit going. Power play did us zero favors, and Shesty is struggling with his game. Despite these woes this the first regulation loss since Boston. Can’t be mad at that.
It is what it is. On to the next one.
Johnny G with the zingggerrrr yowzaaa
Just another thought, but going 0 and 4 on the PP is pretty bad. We score on even ONE of those and the complexion of the game changes completely. I think our PP woes tonight were partially attributed to Hellebuyck being a brick wall, but our PP has been trending down all season so something stinks there.
Hellebuyck goalied us but our defense is not on par for 2021-2022 Igor which he’s not right now
Hellebuyck played a phenomenal game, and our defense had some lapses that cost us. Tough to lose like that when you out play them, but sometimes that happens.
Stevie V makes a good point. We have a habit of warming up opposing goalies.
So obviously not the end of the world loss, like that fucking hurts especially after the last 20 days of Rangers Hockey but we move on
No shame in getting goalied when he literally makes 50 saves. Not much more you can do, can’t win them all unfortunately.
Peaks and valleys boys. You can either be sad and pout or you can have optimism. I’m not pouting
Hellebuyck reverted back to his 2019 Vezina form I see. 50 saves bro wtf
No doom and gloom parties getting worked after 51 shots. Unbelievable game from hellebuyck
One frustrating fucking loss
The league is whack having potential wild card teams with 5-6 games in hand, when are they gonna get a chance to catch up and why are there an outrageous amount of back to backs all across the nhl this year?!
My last note: brodz in lecision out PLEASE
Much needed few days of rest here.
Apparently Igor didnt speak to any media after the game
Connor Hellebuyck tonight was Kirk Mclean during Game 1 1994 Finals.
This was a tough pill to swallow watching from the Garden lower bowl. Massively outshot them and out-chanced them but only one to show on the scoresheet.
How often does a team outshoot their opponent 51-21 and come up with an L?????
Their goalie single-handedly won the game for them while also capitalizing on the few chances they got.
I fully expected a loss tonight simply because for whatever fucking reason, Hellebuyck just plays out of his mind against the rangers. It’s so fucking annoying
So when does the PP go back to what worked?
Shesterkin is now 17-2-3 against the Western conference this season and 34-6-5 in his career.
It’s amazing what this team has accomplished in the last 10 games without him playing that well for a lot of them. He’s a little off his game right now but he and Benny will figure it out.
Hellebuyck was good. Igor was not that good. And that was the story of the game. Also, power play, meh.
This game was frustrating, disappointing, and all of the above. The Jets played a well-executed game. Being honest, people. Defensively they were unbelievable. Connor Hellebuyck was a brick wall. Guess that’s why he’s a Vezina Trophy winning goalie. Like Groundhog Day. He stonewalled the Rangers early in the season and he did it again tonight. Bowness imo should be up for the Jack Adams Trophy. Done a really good job this season after how the Jets previous season was.
Now on to the Rangers tonight. Defensively, they looked like shit. Key taking a dumb puck over the glass penalty which led to a goal. Noticed hes done that a couple of times lately. Igor has been struggling lately. He needs to play more. Why? because he can definitely play out of this funk. Rather play this bad now instead of in the playoffs. Also, too many goals given up early in the game. Playing this comeback type of games isnt healthy. Especially during the playoffs. It has been done before. But you cant live and die by this method. Although I like the shifts the Rangers had when they controlled the puck without shooting was excellent…. For a skills competition. Bad in the neutral zone. But as stated above; the Jets were excellent defensively. The yute line and Trocheck were the Rangers best players, probably Trocheck’s best game as a Ranger.
Having said that, a kick in the pants really. But hey, that’s hockey for ya. Not gonna lie or complain. Games like this can happen ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT IN THE NHL. On any night, those shots the Rangers had in tonight’s game, could have gone in the net. Whatever. Not gonna dwell on it. Onto Detroit on Thursday.
