With Kasperi Kapanen hitting waivers I did a quick Sami Kapanen deep dive. Totally different from what I remember. I was a huge Sami fan. Thought he played here for 8+ years. Can’t believe he never scored more than 12 goals and 34 points in a season. Just mind blowing to me. Always thought he was such a better player stat wise.

Sami’s appeal was his versatility. Could play anywhere on lines 2, 3 or 4 and even suited up at D a few times iirc.

    Good penalty killer too

Despite him being Finnish, the man was a Swiss army knife out there.

I’ll also add to other peoples comments, Hitchcock’s system wasn’t very offensive oriented and we also had insane depth back then.

God I miss the good times, going into every year we were a Stanley Cup contender.

He was more of an extremely versatile 3rd liner and special teams guy for the Flyers and would fill in on D when needed.

His real value doesn’t play on paper. Sami was inspiring. He made his teammates better players.

Remember when even he fought in the Sens brawl game. Classic.

Sami also is a Flyers legend for getting to the bench after taking a brutal hit in double OT which allowed play to continue and ultimately resulted in Roenick’s series clinching goal. Arguably one of the biggest goals for the Flyers franchise in the last 25 years.
