I don’t understand it either. They’re quite responsive if you ever want to ask them why on twitter.

  2. Turbulent_System_446

They’ve just always been huge Caniacs

  3. Lets_Go_Wolfpack

I’m confused…why would EDM trade us players if they have a solid chance to win the cup?

  4. bytor_2112

Right?? I’m terrified of Boston and dreading meeting then again in the playoffs — given what we’re all seeing play out, it’s hard to believe that people think we’re a shoo-in for the Finals…

  5. TheHalfChubPrince

They’re always high on the Canes because of advanced stats.

Is EVERYTHING a jinx to you people?

Raise your hand if you really want to go back to the old days when we were a joke and nobody expected anything out of us.

« Underdog » isn’t the only possible narrative for victory.

For those confused, you need to also look at the Moneypuck power rankings, of which we are #1 (and by a fairly large margin). The Rags and Devils, meanwhile, are both pretty far down the rankings, which is why it says we have a nearly 50% chance to reach the ECF. The Leafs and Bolts are both highly rated, which is why Boston is that much lower than us.

    Money puck wants a rematch.

.2% so you’re telling me there’s a chance?! Ima just go ahead and bump that down to 0% because i don’t even want a chance lol

But wait! We haven’t made any “significant “ trades!!! Says Cane fan

I think this is a combo of 3 things:

    1. We look really, really good across all analytics, which is what this is based on
    2. The East is an absolute murderer’s row and some very strong teams are going to go down in the first round (*sweating nervously*)
    3. I’m not 100% sure, but I think Moneypuck’s stats don’t adjust automatically based on trades, they adjust based on games played. Lot of the recent acquisitions in the East haven’t played for their new teams yet

    They really like Jesse Puljujarvi.

Unless the power play turns around, I just don’t see it happening. You have to be able to capitalize on the other team’s mistakes and the Canes just haven’t been doing it.

If the playoff series were for example best of 21 instead of best of 7 I’d agree the Canes are favorites. The problem is one off game is enough to swing a 7 game series.

They had Canes over Oilers for a while as last years final too. As a Canes and Oilers fan, I’m getting my hopes up again just for both teams to lose in the same week.

  16. For everyone new to moneypuck, they judge this based on each team’s share of expected goals. The Canes are specifically built to generate tons of chances and limit chances against, this is a very data-driven play style that models like Moneypuck love. If we generate 63% of the chances in a given game, we’re way more likely to win that game, regardless what our shooting % is. The reason we’re favorites for the cup on Moneypuck is because, luck and bounces aside, we create more scoring opportunities than the other team. This does not take into account hot goalies or teams with elite finishing, which is why the Rangers, who rely on Shesterkin and finish, are rated so low. So all in all, take this with a grain of salt but know that we’re looking at an elite team here

Either Moneypuck is deliberately trying to curse us or they see something we don’t.
