I’ll paraphrase some of the topics he hit on:

On trade rumors: “it’s unfortunate people want to make things up… the rumors make for good twitter accounts”

On potential trading away some of the (first round) draft capital they acquired: there was a few discussions we had with 3 or 4 team deals for certain position players in certain age groups, but we were bullish on the value of those picks and it didn’t come through.”

On how to approach multiple first round draft picks: “they’ll start honing in on the top ten pick, he’s never had. A top 10 pick in his career. He has looked at the option of moving up or down to get multiple picks in multiple rounds (2 firsts, 2 seconds, etc).”

Free agent market: “he doesn’t expect them to be very active in the free agent market. Doesn’t see many names that excite the club that fit with their timeline. That’s why they brought in kapanen and vrana, hungry players ready to capitalize. He feels they have 7 of 9 top 9 forwards for next year, hope neighbours can be 8th and will have to go out and find the ninth”

On timeline: “they don’t expect it to be 8-10 year process. Need to give buldoc and snuggerud some time to mature”

On vrana: “feels they’re comfortable where he’s at in the players assistance program. Loves giving people (players) second chances. When looking at skill he’s a top 6 player”

On prospects timeline: “most players picked out of the top 10 will need 24-36 months. Dean will have the chance like neighbours had this year, but not have to grow in the AHL, same with buldoc.”(many believe snuggerud will return for his sophomore year at Minnesota next year)

What do you want to see down the stretch: “determined effort, doesn’t think as an organization they’ve handled the last few weeks well, but feels they can exhale. Expects them to be competitive and surprise some people”

Hope this version of Build Back Better is better than the current one.

Honesty it’s incredibly refreshing to finally have him just admit it’s a re-tool/re-build. Bring it low cost young players when we can, exchange aged talent for future assets, build around our new core of Thomas/Kyrou/Buch

Legitimately I think the only way Doug leaves STL is if he steps down/retires.

Does he have missteps and sign some wacky deals? Sure, but the man knows what he’s doing and is one of the best. I know I would feel way less comfortable with someone else at the helm.

Grabbing Kapanen and Vrata was smart business too. It gives fans a reason to tune into games to see if these guys can pull it together and make a comeback to form. You need something interesting if you’re gonna be losing for awhile.

    My favorite quote:

“The world is about second chances, and I like the opportunity to give him a second chance.”

    What a Doug.
