A week ago everyone was bashing them saying they needed to make a big move in order to be competitive. And they didn’t do enough and don’t have the scoring to compete. Then they scored 12 goals in 2 games and shut them up real quick.

What a joke. More fuel for Aho’s fire, that’s for sure. For Ghost and Pool Party as well, I’d bet.

I knew we made good moved from the start. Doomers turned supporters without recognizing they were wrong is super annoying

Many on the Facebook page wanted them to give the farm away to win a cup .like the Rangers and Bruins did .but I was saying trade smart not sacrifice your future I was okay with them dealing Suzuki in a deal

It was a doomer Complainiac circle jerk in here for a month or more. Now they will wait in the wings until we don’t score for several power plays and they’ll jump us again. Heaven forbid we lose a playoff series. No helping us or this sub then. It will be a bloodbath with them calling for Don’s head and bashing Rod. Only The Cup will save us from their vitriolic savagery.

I’m fine with it honestly. We are 2nd in the league and the last time we were 2nd we won a Cup. I hadn’t watched much ghost bear or pool party but I have learned to never doubt Don Waddell or Rod Brind’Amour ever again.
Huge_Deke19
Wake me up when the playoffs start. They are 100% a better regular season team with the trades they made. Scoring on the road during the playoffs is still a huge concern with the team being essentially the same as last season. The canes will probably have to go up against a vezina trophy winner and our goalies are made of glass

The Canes had a good trade deadline. They needed a Great trade deadline.

The truth is, we’ll see.
I’ve been supportive of the way it all went down; obviously I would’ve preferred more but I’m ok with the philosophy of maintaining a bright future, and I think the moves we did made leaned into our strengths, even if we didn’t fix the glaring hole.
However, 2 games against a tanking Arizona and a reeling Lightning shouldn’t be the definitive proof of how good or bad the deadline was. We still have to win the division. We still have to play NYR twice, TOR twice, BOS and NJ once. We still have to see if we can have effective special teams in the playoffs. There’s a lot to prove, and one bad game in Vegas or two fantastic games after don’t prove anything, one way or another.
The real impact of this trade deadline won’t be felt until April or May, and it honestly could be May of *next* year before we can say it with some conviction. Because the strategy was to make sure next year and beyond we’re still viable – if we are, and some of the teams that made these big moves are struggling, let’s say – then we’ll be able to look back at this moment with more clarity. Or, if we can’t get our core signed and moving forward, we may regret not pushing it all in here.

It’s a real feature of this sub and the internet in general – there is no middle ground. We go from, « Fire Rod, Fire Don, Trade everybody, move the team, we’re going to get swept in the playoffs first round » to « We may never lose again, every power play is a goal for us now, we’re the best team ever, we’re winning the Stanley Cup ».
I think we’ve got a better than average shot of winning the Stanley Cup but it’s kind of a hard thing to do and there’s a bit of luck involved and predicting the future is a real crapshoot….
Nonetheless, I’m here for the ride: 🎺🎺🎺 Let’s Go Canes 🎺🎺🎺

It’s annoying how many folks look at small sample sizes and run with it. It’s like the folks who were throwing in the towel after the Vegas game (that neither acquisition played in). Let stuff breathe before we put a grade on anything.
I personally liked-not-loved the Canes deadline, but to say it’s successful because Gostibehere had two good games is wild.

Everything is way too reactionary. Did we NEED to make a big acquisition at the deadline? No probably not. Do these two wins mean we had a successful deadline? Fuck no. We beat the worst team in the league and Tampa team that’s lost 5 in a row.

I’m very happy with how we look and I’m feeling far less negative but two games, both of which were played without JP, are not enough to make me sit back and assume we’ll rule over the playoffs. I’m optimistic, sure, but having any opinion on the TDL after two games is a little premature.

Since there’s been talk of fan reaction—the doomers—I’ll throw in my two cents regarding at least part of what I think fuels that mentality.
Like many of you, I’ve been a fan since the team moved to Greensboro, suffered the slings and arrows of media mockery, and the rosters who seemed destined to finish middle-of-the-pack. Then came 2002 which showed a lot of people that, once the playoffs start, anything can happen. Losing to the Red Wings, while not an enormous shock, left a more significant concern: could this franchise ever reach the biggest stage again?
In the immediate aftermath, it seemed unlikely.
Then 2005-06 came along, and the team ran roughshod over the new-look NHL. I still remember the absolute gut punch of watching Pisani score the shorthanded game-winner in OT of Game 5, followed by the mauling the team took in Game 6. We all know how Game 7 went, and what that emotional high felt like. Beyond that, the ultimate question from 2002 came back.
Missing the playoffs for two seasons after winning the Cup, a surprise EC Finals run in 09, and then « The Drought. » The team languished in mediocrity for a decade and anytime one of us mentions « The Dark Times, » there’s no explanation needed.
Now, for the first time in this franchise’s history, we have not only a great team, but a team that’s set up for the immediate future. We have a phenomenal coach who the players love and an owner who’s willing to spend money on the team. We’re on the verge of a 5th consecutive playoff appearance, something unthinkable not that long ago.
Despite the success, the specter of « The Dark Times » looms like a thunderhead, and some seem to be waiting for the shoe to drop that sends us back to being a middling, mediocre team. There’s the pride of seeing how far this team has come, mixed with the wounds of falling short in the postseason. It’s a complex web of emotion, a glass case if you will, that leaves us dangling above a pit of despair.
The truth is, this team (perhaps this era) is not like any before. There are multiple young players finding big roles, solid prospects in the system, and a management team with a clearly-defined plan. Even if this year isn’t « The Year, » this team is good and will continue to be good. The question of whether they get back to the grand stage feels less important than asking « when? »

Grading our trade deadline is a waste of time at this point. We made a push for an elite scorer to get us by elite teams in the playoffs – if we get past those elite teams in the playoffs, I’d say we had a successful deadline. If we still struggle to score against those teams in the playoffs, I’d say we didn’t have a good deadline.
Early looks seem that our powerplay is where we want it to be, so the outstanding question that needs to be answered as it relates to our trade acquisitions is are they good enough to carry us in the playoffs? I’m not saying it’s cup or bust, but we were not scoring a ton in the playoffs, so any improvement there is a win in my eyes.
