Most of these guys don’t amount to much so I’m hoping for a mid-6 forward but I’m not holding my breath. The college guys who really succeed are usually high picks in the first place (Fox, Wheeler) and the guys like McDonough end up more like Jimmy Vesey or worse.

Honestly, I think Canuck fans shouldn’t temper their expectations of McDonough. This kid is a 7th-round pick and you know what? 7th-round picks always turn out if you ignore the players who don’t. This guarantees that McDonough is going to be the next Lidstrom/Datysuk/Zetterberg-late-round-hall-of-famer. If this kid doesn’t score 40 goals in the next season or two then I’ll add him to the ignore list for the next 7th rounder.

It would just be nice to be able to put a 7th rounder in the lineup.

Realistically I’m expecting his upside to be a third liner with the ability to slot in our PP2. Which on its own is a big win for a 7th rounder. Good shot he ends up being a AHL tweener though in all honesty, having questionable skating will usually do that

    AHL 2nd line

The speed of pro hockey is likely to stunt his progression

  6. swanguard

    Definitely top 6….in Abbotsford!

To make the roster at any line will be a win. He needs to showcase his attributes and define his role.

  8. rakinvests

My guess is he won’t crack the roster and we’ll blame ownership/management/coaching staff for ruining a 7th round draft pick.

  9. SackofLlamas

If he even cracks the roster it’ll be a stunning scouting win. Likeliest outcome is he turns into a solid contributor for Abbotsford.

  10. Ryansahl

Anyone know which scout found him?

He’ll play a handful of games and score a few points – and everyone on r/canucks will treat him like the second coming. They’ll massively down-vote anyone who says he’s actually just a bottom-6 forward. After a few dozen games he’ll be like 0.2ppg so he’ll get sent down to the AHL and everyone will be like ‘he’s better than X, why is he in the AHL???’ After a few years of working his way up to 0.75ppg in the AHL – and the occasional stretch with the Canucks (where he doesn’t score very much) – he’ll get thrown in on a trade and everyone here will forget he exists.

Too early to tell. He has a chance at becoming an NHLer if he can become a top 6 player in Abby.

I tend to keep the bar low. Stress management is important at my age and after all these years as a Canuck fan.

  14. Velentr

Not sure but I think they’re gonna ease him in a little

  15. DrHockey69

Give him a 10 game tryout T6, only 10 games left in season.

  16. JarmaBeanhead

Oh that man is definitely a bottom. Look at those DSLs.

  17. AmielJohn

I m hoping he is the next Datsyuk.

  18. SMA2343

I don’t know. I want to see him play.

  19. whoozitfor

Put him in tomorrow…only six shots so far tonight. What could it hurt?
