There are maybe 5 teams in the nhl right now playing at a level that can keep up with NYR. Tonight will be good test for new york against the Canes to see what fire power they have and how much depth (4th line) they have. Then again Galant may say to his team we don't need any injuries stretched the bench and short shift . He either really goes for the metro title tonight by going 5 straight or not.

Although I agree that this isn't their year. Yet your reasoning is strange and I think you expect too much of young players. Not every young top 5 pick is McDavid, Matthew's, Crosby or Ovechkin and immediately tears up the league. Hell, even MacKinnon was a slowly integrated player that fans wanted traded for years before he put I all together. Marchand was a late bloomer and so was Kucherov. Didn't make them useless before hand, just meant they were still learning the league. I'm sure if Lafrenier wasn't constantly used as a net front presence he would have more points. But gallant is smart enough to force him into that while he's young so it's not a glaring weakness as he gets older. Does he look kinda bad doing it? For sure, but it's a necessary part of his long term development. And they have enough skill to make up for it anyways. And as we always see in the playoffs, certain guys who looked boring in the regular season have insane post seasons once they are let loose to run more on their instinct and adrenalin (that they've been training to do all season). Also it's impossible to weigh leadership without knowing the room, unless players show unleaderly outbreaks on the ice or bench, which is rare. Think MacKinnon yelling at Bednar 4 years ago. And considering his success last season I don't think it was really a problem.
