I get that this is so all goalies can play, Schmid will be available for the playoffs if needed. But why not send Blackwood down as a conditioning stint?
Completely insane to me. Blackwood ain’t it and VV has had some bad stretches. One bad period where the Devils played 0 defense and this is the result? Really don’t get it.
This is expected even if unpopular. The team isnt carrying 3 goalies and with Wood back now and Nate hopefully soon, to stay at the contract limit Akira needs to go back to Utica. It sucks but they arent going to waive Mac. They may let him walk in the summer but as long as hes healthy hes going to get games.
Having 3 goalies getting reps heading to the playoffs isnt the worst idea. Job is still Viteks to lose. I wouldnt recommend melting down over this, as these last 9 games are gunna be getting Mac some starts, finding lines, and working on special teams.
We may not believe in Blackwood but time and time again the team has stated they have faith in Blackwood. Not saying it is right just not surprising. I’m fine with VV + Blackwood the rest of the season because it gives Schmid playing time and let’s us see what we have in Blackwood. Even if we kept Schmid up VV would still be the game 1 starter.
Also good chance Blackwood gets injured before playoffs start anyway…
Don’t overreact everyone. This is just to get all the goalies games. Schmid can split with Daws, Mac with Vitek. Schmid will come back for playoffs. Don’t worry.

This is good for Schmid to get more playing time especially with Utica gearing up for playoffs. And for Blackwood it’s clear the coaching staff still feels like when he’s on his game he’s gonna give the team a good chance to win alongside Vanecek, so Schmid was always going to be the odd man out.
Besides if they need Schmid back they’ll just call him up again anyway.
I don’t like this because it seems obvious to me that Blackwood is shot. Watching him try to move laterally hurts me–I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable for him, either.

Blackwood must be a brick wall in practice because he does not show enough consistency in games to give me any faith. Hope Vanacek returns to form so we don’t have to worry

Need to be compliant with the roster limit and Schmid is waiver eligible.
Schmid will be playing big games for Utica and come playoff time, if Utica is eliminated, we’ll have 3 goalies for playoffs. Especially coming off last season’s goaltending, this is a blessing.
