Jarry is the issue. Among goaltenders he's 22nd in games played. His GAA is below average, and he's been yanked 4 times in the past 12 games. Last night was his * 2nd * shutout (tying him with Carter Hart of the Flyers) of the season. DeSmith is not a 1A option. (Below average and I'm being kind). Furthermore, he does NOT have a good playoff track record. His one series (against the Islanders, was HISTORICALLY ** BAD **)
It's not all on Jarry, however. Dumolin has forgotten how to play defense. Routinely out of position. Colby overstated the injury situation. Nothing like the past two years.
The bigger issue is the salary cap. Carter (3.25M) has a NMC and quite frankly he should've been healthy scratched multiple times this year. Granlund (5M) is NOT the guy. (The Pens gave up a # 2 for him, with NO retention of salary. They're probably still laughing about that one in Nashville). Dumolin (4M), will be playing for another team next season. Rust (5M) has fallen off a cliff.
The decision to protect Carter over McCann will haunt this team. The signing of Kappy was a headscratcher at the time. (Good luck to him on the Blues). One can only hope the FSG moves on from Hextall in the off-season, and possibly Burke as well.
Ironically the "Big-3" have done well, despite their age. Sullivan's "style" doesn't mesh with the team on ice.
It will be a battle till the end. We shall see
