  1. Can’t see backy going anywhere… so we need to surround him with solid wingers. I see Kuzy and Mantha being moved out. Hopefully the Caps can bring in Ehlers

  2. As a neutral, my preseason prediction was wrong on the Caps. I thought they did a nice mini-retool last summer but injuries put paid to any playoff hopes .
They're still only a couple of shrewd moves from being back in the postseason conversation IMO. Cap space is an issue though

  3. Ovi beating the all time goals record is all that matters. Can rebuild after.

  4. I hope Irwin resigns, very underrated defensive defenseman and I’ve seen what he brings to the team at practices and on the bench. He’s a great guy off the ice, someone who can make a locker room feel more like a family. If they can keep the cap reasonable no reason not to let him return.

  5. It was probably inevitable, but it seemed like when Backy and Wilson came back the good chemistry they had going was completely disrupted

  6. Really hope Caps can somehow get rid of Mantha and Kuzy in the off-season!

  7. The Caps are in trouble as long as they are paying Backstrom, Kuznetsov, and Oshie a combined 23 million to be respectively a -26🤮 -25🤮 and -18🤢. Even with 75 points Ovi was a -16 and was noticeably bad trying to backcheck compared to the few previous years. The Caps made the decision to ride out Ovi and Backstrom's careers and unless some young players like McMichael, Lapierre, Protas and Malenstyn drastically start having more success us fans are in for some lean years.

  8. This will be a very interesting off season for Washington. Interesting isn't good. Interesting sucks. Ho hum is good. Yawn generating is good.

  9. If Wilson and Carlson both healthy this year, I definitely think they make the playoffs. I'd be shocked if Backstrom comes back at all, as sad as that is to say. He's beeen an incredibly effective center for them during Ovi's career and definitely their second most valuable player when he's healthy. I really like the Sandin add, as their blue line is Pitsburg levels of old.

I'd agree with the sentiment that the Caps should stand pat and look to make the playoffs next year. I hope they work out a deal to keep Kuz. Trading him, unless they can get someone who can fill a top 6 center role, is fairly critical to the team.

I'm eagerly anticipating the Philly video. I've got a novels worth of thoughts on them, as I'm sure others do as well.

  10. If the Caps could be rid of that Backstrom contract… I know I'd be heartbreaking, but they could really use that cap space he occupys, and I would be absolutely shocked if he has a bounce back year

  11. Smart move selling the team is getting older and Even if they did make the first round it's unlikely they beat carolina or boston in round 1

  12. Spot on assessment Shannon. I'm ultimately a Ducks fan, but in the Eastern Conference I root for Washington and Tampa. I think i if/ when Ovechkin surpasses Gretzky I think Ovi, Backstrom, Wilson and Oshi all retire.

  13. While I understand the business perspective of wanting Backstrom's contract off the books, I don't think you see that happening, both due to fan backlash but also backlash from Ovechkin and the rest of the team. While his future is uncertain etc, I think if he takes a 3c role and sees less powerplay time he'll still be very effective in limited minutes, and importantly, I think if the team brings up its youthful stars from Hershey who've been more than deserving of a chance to actually get NHL time–he will be an invaluable mentor to players like LaPierre, Protas, McMichael. He should retire on his terms as opposed to being forced out.

  14. This team will suffer because of Ovi try to beat the goal record. Caps won't do a rebuild because of it. They got to keep some good veterans.

  15. The main problem this year was coaching, Laviolette's time in Washington had expired and he wasn't allowing younger players like McMichael and LaPierre into the lineup despite their strong seasons in Hershey. With him gone, hopefully those two are given a real shot at the roster and deployed in the proper situations
