Strange play for sure. They always teach you to have your head on a swivel with the puck. Why Willy wouldn’t quickly look over his shoulder to see where that defender was is a mystery. Know all your options. Tells me he was in a pass first mode all the way.

  2. ffviiftw

Yea this play confused the shit out of me

  3. TheLeadingRole

Yeah he frustrated the shit out of me last night. Oh well, I smell a big game from him tomorrow though he usually bounces back from poor performances decently enough.

  4. AxelTV

I don’t think he realized the defenseman blew his tire…. Albeit baffling…

  5. h3yn0w75

He’s had a brutal playoffs so far.

  6. plainnoob

This one was painful to watch. Although we have the benefit of the birds-eye view. Don’t think he saw the defenceman went down as other have pointed out

  7. RootTips

In the arena it didn’t look as bad albeit unfortunate. It was loud as hell in there and it looked like he had no idea the dman even went down.

  8. Jonesdeclectice

ITT: people seem to forget this isn’t CHEL – the players don’t just “know” when a player behind them falls down, they have to see it. I would be more interested to see the entire scene in context, this looks a bit too cherry picked for my liking.

  9. ESF-hockeeyyy

    Bunting scored shortly after this.

  10. toedragrelease

I was screaming at my tv “GO TO THE NET”.. don’t think he knew the defender fell.

  11. BORT_licenceplate27

I remember watching this. He was definitely overthinking things yesterday

  12. JonnyAlien23

Two things. First, we don’t know what he saw or could see in the moment. Second, he had just stopped up and lost all his speed while the trailing defenseman was still gliding towards him. I remember this play and this still frame doesn’t show the whole story. Within the next two or so frames, that defenseman closes the gap. It still would’ve resulted in a scoring chance, but he didn’t have the time and space to just walk it to the net for a 1 on 1 with Bob. This screenshot is misleading compared to what actually happened in real time.

  13. Ballsahoy72

Saw this. This happened all night: players with clean looks or shooting lanes opting to wait for trailers. Coaching?

  14. EarlWolf47

Don’t think he realized the time and space he had

While Willie does appear frustrating at times, he commands the respect of the other team (his speed and finesse moves). He is simply not a player that is looking for contact and it will never be his game.

He is a decent value player for his production at his salary…not cheap but not overpaid. Now if you jack his salary up to $9-10 million, then we can have a longer conversation about his play.

He seems destined to go through spells where he looks indifferent and spells where every shot he takes looks like it will find the back of the net. Before this year, I didn’t really see his value…but I have been baffled multiple times seeing the opposition back off of him and realize he is a bigger threat than we give him credit for.

Put another way, I am fairly certain every other team would love to take him off our hands.

  16. deadlygr8ful

Ya, I just didn’t understand why he didn’t. He doesn’t look like he is running on full confidence right now. Would be nice to get him going….

Willy has gone without a goal in five straight and pointless in three. Bottom line is we need more from him.

EDIT: I also see that half this sub is flipping out that Keefe is considering re-uniting Marner and Matthews. Well I wonder why??? Nylander has been with Matthews the last three games and guess what? He isn’t producing!!! Nylander is always the wild card on this team. The other guys have all stepped up he needs to get his head out of his ass and start putting up some points that the bottom line. If he can’t produce with Matthews he isn’t doing any good on that line.

I hate when Willy looks like he plays scared. When he’s nervous his awareness is AWFUL.

I hate to say it but I think the Leafs should really consider checking to see what a team will trade for him. Don’t get me wrong he’s going to light it up on another team too but I think we should consider what we can get back in return for him and really think about it.

He’s a highly skilled guy but also butter soft and shys away from contact too often to the point where if the games get aggressive enough (which only gets worse the longer your in the PO) he becomes invisible.. and playoffs EVERYBODY needs to be dialed in and ready. He can get you points but he’s a liability defensively.

I’m also a Nylander Fan and followed his progress through junior and we’ll through his Marlies career.

I hate it when he plays like Wayne Gretzky 1 game, then packs it in and coasts for the next 4 games. That might get you by during the regular season but not the playoffs.

He’s Peter Forsberg without the defense, hits, and grit. Which is still good, but not great.

  19. IAM_LordTobias

Nylander be like yeah, I just want to get my golf game on and these playoffs are taking too long.

  20. Menessy27

He doesn’t have eyes in the back of his head mate

  21. Judge_Tredd

    He didn’t realize he fell.

  22. badboystwo

William drives me nuts like that. Every time this guy drives the net he either scores or the other team gets a penalty. I don’t understand why he stops

  23. bravoleafs

Both parties arguing over Nylander’s game on this thread are correct. Nylander has been instrumental in moments and in other moments looks like he would rather be on a beach somewhere. Point is we need him to be all in all the time, he’s our X factor.

  24. LairdOftheNorth

This probably wasn’t his best play

  25. 22 points in his last 21 playoff games.

  26. hittinskittles

This was the equivalent of Ben Simmons passing up an open layup under the basket to dish it to someone else

  27. Borkovski87

Nylander was our best forward last night by a mile. Why are y’all doing this.
