That was your opinion of Dubas a few days ago. Now that he's wanting to stay in Toronto, and essentially not put his name in the hat for the Penguins, or any other GM job for that matter, your opinion on that is it's good he won't be a candidate? So what changed? You knew he was an analytics based GM. I'm betting if he'd have said the Penguins job would be very interesting and he'd be open to something like that, you'd still be openminded about it, if not more in favor of it.
I said at the very beginning that Botterill would probably be GM, and all these other names were just to make it look like there was actual thought and effort put into the search. FSG is leaning heavily on people like Sullivan to steer them, and becuase of that, Jason is on the shortest of lists as having experience working with Sullivan and the Penguins. He's the perfect yes man, but I actually don't think he's what this team needs. He oversaw a losing culture in Buffalo. His drafts in his 3 years with the Sabres left a lot to be desired. His trade of O’Reilly to the Blues was universally panned. He signed Skinner to an absurd contract at the time worth $9 million a year, based on a small sample size, and even though he finally had a career year this season, they still massively overpaid for him. Botterill also did little through free agent signings to make the team any better during his tenure. I'll tell you this as well, if he's the GM, be ready for a boatload of Swedes and Finns being added to the team. I've never see a GM who leaned so heavily on a specific geographical source for players. Nothing wrong with it, but he's obviously obsessed with shopping in that market.
For GM, I don't see the need for one with any Pittsburgh ties, Patrick didn't have any, Shero didn't, and neither did Rutherford. What are we, Philly? Not that any GM they hire will matter in the end anyway. He'll just be there to oversee the transition from the Sid Era, to the next one, and hand the keys to another GM who with a new coach, will try to build something good again.
I don't think Boterill would be a bad GM but I'm not sure he's the best choice. He didn't do that well in Buffalo, made only one move that worked out for the Sabres (the Thompson, O'Reilly trade) which took years for it to finally work. Plus a fresh set of eyes assessing the organization from the ground up might be a good thing. My favorite choice for GM is Eric Tulsky from Carolina.
