I’m not sure the Sun is a great source, but I don’t find this terribly hard to believe in light of the news out of Tempe this morning.

  2. AgileLegCramp

My favorite non-Blackhawk. Would be sick to land him.

  3. fuelhogshawks

Idk, man brings a lot of losing baggage with him when it comes to the post season. Maybe Chicago could change that but I’d be wary of signing him, I’m just an armchair GM so what do I know anyways

  4. DiamondBurInTheRough

Me, now, because I’m jealous: Matthews is overrated and has a punchable face

Me, later, if he becomes a Blackhawk: I have never wanted anything but success for this lovely man and I will cherish him and he shall be my squishy

What is this based on? Cap space is the only advantage we’ve got. The Hawks are still going to need years to rebuild. I imagine Auston would want to go to a team with a better chance of winning a cup.

  6. Godlikelobster01

If nobody else wants him then I guess maybe we can find a spot for him idk

  7. frankthomasofficial

His contract would probably cripple us. Bedard and him will make like $30mil combined at some point. It will be the leafs 2.0

I love mathews but unless we get a decent deal, and we wont, lets look the 10 1st round picks we got and develop those guys for cheaper. Otherwise we will be shipping them off to stay under the cap once they need a new deal.

  8. chritty

I wouldn’t mind him in a Hawks sweater at all, but didn’t he just make a statement saying he wants to stay with the Leafs?

  9. RepresentativePale29

We need to forewarn r/hockey and r/nhl so that they can cue up their takes that the most rational penalty for the Kyle Beach cover-up would be that the Blackhawks would not be allowed to sign free agents during the 2024 offseason.

  10. SpecialAircraft

He’s gone on record saying he wants to get an extension with the leafs done this summer but we’ll see if their numbers match

  11. lyme6483

As a Canadiens fan as well, this would be hilarious because fuck the leafs, I just worry about cap structure with him and Bedard.

  12. Pootz_

Maybe let’s wait and see what this team actually needs before throwing a pile of cash at free agents? Long and expensive contracts screwed the team in the past, it would be nice if this current regime was smarter when it comes to the cap. Timeline doesn’t really work either, the hawks are still at least 2-3 years away from sniffing the playoffs and I think that’s pretty optimistic. Just stay the course and build from within

  13. Indigo-Snake

This guy is literally the best goal scorer in the league after Ovi and people are complaining because his team chokes in the playoffs? I’d be stoked if he becomes a Blackhawk

  14. Beaver_Tuxedo

Why would we want a guy that’s gunna need a 15 million dollar contract when we are just starting a rebuild?

  15. Grouchy_Old_GenXer

This is called Auston Matthew’s agent talking to the Toronto Sun on the down low to juice the price.

  16. iamherefortherecepie

If he doesn’t want an extension with the Blackhawks then there’s no point in trading for him.

  17. Morguard

The sun is a tabloid. This is clickbait.

  18. bill24681

He may be the only player in the league with a better shot than Bedard at this point

  19. Schen_The_Genius

    Please don’t, please don’t, please don’t.

  20. 3Hammer44

Virtually illegitimate journalism. Four paragraphs and the only source is « the latest odds. »

    FOH.

  21. dishonourableprince

Just no. Matthews is one of my favourite players but the Hawks are in no position to take on any big contracts, that’s just not where we’re at in the rebuild yet. It’d be cool to have a two headed monster in Bedard and Matthews but it would destroy our future cap situation.

  22. Funky-Donuts

I don’t know about this one, chief

  23. gudenes_yndling

As of now the guy is a great player but seems to disappear in the playoffs. Same with Panarin. But might be a great addition if the salary cap goes up in the next seasons.

  24. swagner27

Elliott Friedman was the motivation for this fire on his 32 Thoughts when he said that the Leafs will look to make some moves before the draft. Especially Matthews and Nylander.

Matthews for Jones and 19th pick?

Then Davidson signs DeBrincat when he is a UFA?

  25. jjb8712

Isn’t the Toronto Sun a tabloid?

With his childhood team now all but relocating, I think he’ll either stay in Toronto or go to the Kings.

  26. Horrible_Harry

My biggest worry is that we’ll have to ship off Malkin to free up some cap space to afford Matthews.

  27. DannyTannersFlow

We have been hamstrung with outlandish contracts for years, don’t need to introduce a new one.

  28. Go_Buds_Go

These are conversations to be had between friends. Do you really want either one of these guys reading the results online?
