And just like that this chapter of Leafs history is complete.

  2. CapsTheArbiter

Goddamnit. His tenure ended way too early.

  3. Samurai1221

Results weren’t there but he was always class and this continues that.

  4. CMDRShepardN7

He didn’t specifically thank Shanahan. Let’s all speculate, go!

This reads like « I was gonna have to do some hard shit and I wanted to make sure that my family and myself were okay with that and the repercussions (socially, professionally, emotionally) that would come from that » and that while he was thinking about that, Shanny kicked the chair

    Text version for accessibility:

While I understand there is interest surrounding the circumstances of my
departure, I will not get into the specifics of what I consider to be
reasonable and consistent but private discussions. In the days that I felt
I needed to assess and evaluate my own view to the future, both with
respect to the necessary direction of the Club and ensuring that I had the
full support of my family for what I knew would be required in the off-
season and years to follow, the organization, as is their right to do, decided
to go in a different direction.

In the nine seasons since being afforded the opportunity to work in the
National Hockey League for the Toronto Maple leafs, we have had the
chance to learn a lot and have grown significantly through the ups and
downs. We have watched our family double in size while developing
meaningful relationships which will last a lifetime. It was an honour to be
able to work in such an inspiring place, with dedicated, loyal people and an
extremely passionate tan base. The impact of that and the relationships
with all of the people at MLSE, from the board of directors through to the
ushers at Scotiabank Arena, will forever hold a dear place in our hearts.
To the players, coaches and staff at the facility each day, past and present,
thank you for your passion and commitment at every step of the journey
together. It was a tremendous pleasure to work alongside you each day.
    We will roll from here.

He’s got way more class then shanahan. MLSE choose the wrong guy.

  8. ArryPotta

The fact that it seems like it was going to be _way_ too hard for him to do what was necessary is a red flag. He needed to ditch one of his stars that was underperforming, and his long time coaching partner. Dubas seems like a good guy, but I think he needs to learn that he can’t develop relationships with his people that prevent him from doing what needs to be done. It sucks, but that’s the job. All these decisions seem to be coming a year or two late, and it’s probably because he couldn’t cope with being the bad guy. I can see why Shanahan had second thoughts.

Of course Kyle isn’t gunna start talking shit at this point, he’s on the market now and it wouldn’t do anything positive for him. I’ll just wait for his tell all book ten years from now.

  10. Jakovasaurr

Awesome. I thought Dubas was great. Happy to move on now and stop hearing nothing burgers of rumours/speculation hope we get someone new in soon

  11. shekelxpress

Remember this, Shanny gave this guy a chance when no one would. This guy was a nobody, did nothing noteworthy, and Shanny gave him an opportunity. Now a decade later he tries to shake him for more money, and ends up overplaying his hand.

Now he is some sort of Martyr for trading away picks and spending 40mil on an ineffective core.

  12. Steakholder_

Gonna miss Kyle. He’s the kind of guy I want to see succeed

  13. Altaccount_man

I’m glad we can move on

  14. XingYunLiuShui

    See you in Pittsburgh,Mr President!

  15. NopeItsDolan

Statement like that makes you think he won’t be taking another job anytime soon.

    But we’ll see …

  16. PhilMcCraken2001

I’m sure in like 20 years he’ll write a book on his side of the story.

But until then, he took the high road. Happy to have had him on the leaf’s but onto new things!

  17. radicallyhip

« Meaningful relationships which will last a lifetime » – Matthews confirmed leaving to play for wherever Dubas ends up

  18. toronto_programmer

Say whatever you want about his tenure here Dubas seems like a classy guy that is liked and respected by both his players and peers around the league

  19. please_trade_marner

A good professional response that hopefully calms everybody down. Mudslinging would have been such a bad look for all involved.

  20. LCranstonKnows

    Wasn’t hired for his grammar

  21. Interesting-Test180

This sub is in love with a gm who won 1 playoff series in how long?you’d think we atleast made a finals the way some of you suck off Dubas

  22. Evening_Calm

r/leafs, where being passive aggressive = class

  23. Gankdatnoob

He’s a super nice, perhaps TOO nice. A players coach is one thing but a players GM is trouble and we had both. He really should take a year off and re-calibrate as he said. Going with Pitts would be the pits. They are borderline ready to rebuild.

  24. DaltonFitz

Sometimes good things don’t work out. I was frustrated the organization is losing, from all indications, a stand up person. I have been following the club since 99 and I have never been happier as a fan, and with the direction of the team, as I have with Kyle at the helm.

I don’t really think you have to pick a side. I liked Dubas, but if it went down as Shanahan laid out, I also understand to a certain extent.

There are other people who can build hockey clubs. Shanahan put Dubas in place, and hopefully he carries on with good selections.

I have no doubt Kyle will do well with another organization. Seems like a very Toronto thing for him to go win somewhere else(AA anyone?). If being in hockey isn’t for him, he could probably write a book on his time with the Leafs and retire off that money.

After a few days, my frustration has chilled out a bit. Time to turn the page.

  25. Kojakle

interesting that on dubas way out he puts down the ushers as the least important people in the organization, kinda fucked up tbh

  26. ohandleme

Guy wins one round by the skin of his teeth in how many years and people are acting like the sky is falling. Have been a big Dubas supporter since day one but he’s done nothing. And now the next GM has to come in and clean up a cap nightmare.

Go chase the benjis somewhere else Dubes

  27. JRocleafs

    Signed – The Dubas family

This is a bit of a joke at this point. Stop using your family as leverage. I don’t sign off my employment letters with a goodbye from my family, his wife and kids aren’t employed by MLSE.

Really sounds like he dug his own grave yet acted surprised when he got placed in it. I like Dubas and wanted him to stay, but this family orientated sympathizing tactic is tacky. If you’re concerned about your family why keep bringing them up in public?

  28. big_nose_juicer

Thank God has gone. Wasn’t looking forward to that 15 mill/3 year Matthews extension.

  29. Corporal_Sauce

Good riddance. Last I checked we haven’t won shittt

  30. t_toda_DOTA

Funny he’s talking about the direction of the club when he built it this way for last 5 years. Go to Pitts or Ottawa where less pressure for you and your family. Best of luck.

  31. thismadhatter

Last time I checked, the last 9 cups werent won by GM’s named Dubas. We will be fine. We have some really good prospects developing, and writing off the future GM and scouting staff prematurely isnt the right take. Fans that are still around and have been around a long time have lived through eras of Leafs that make this look like hitting a squirrel as opposed to totalling your car by hitting a moose.

  32. satanhurtsmybum

The team gets criticized constantly for not having the drive to win but then when the gym comes out and says “I’m not sure if I even want this job” everyone is mad when he gets let go.

Hopeless fans doomed for decades of misery.
