I’d go with Doug Wilson, if only because he’s a veteran player and GM that should be able to withstand the intense pressure and stress of being the Maple Leafs GM

If they don’t like any of the AVAILABLE candidates, then why doesn’t Shanny just do his best to do the job in the interim, with the financial cap related advice from Pridham? Then after free agents dealt with, and draft is done – then take your time to get the GM he wants whenever that is?

If Shanahan is as controlling as we hear ,why hire anyone – better yet why would a professional want to put themselves into a puppet position

As far as Mathews walking at the end of his contract. That is not a total loss you get the 12M or perhaps 15M. There're winners out their. Florida n' Vegas have no 15M players.
Also the gambit is TO will give Mathews (his Agent) more money to not "lose" him. Let him play out the season and see what he brings. The money paid needs to be earned, Good looks don't cut it. The reason Treliving hasn't been named yet is because Calgary has only given him permission to talk to the Leafs. They haven't okayed him signing. He's under contract to Calgary until July 1st.
They probably will approve him signing after the draft.
