Hoping Treliving talks to the players first and goes from there. I really think Keefe needs to get bounced

  2. harvardscool

Lmao. Wtf. YOU FIRED THE WRONG GUY SHANNY.

  3. poodleaficionado

Dubas and Spezza gone but Keefe stays? God it’s hard to be a Leaf fan sometimes.

  4. CTHT07

Firing Dubas, keeping Keefe, and hiring Treliving is the exact opposite of what I would have done. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I doubt it.

  5. 3X-Leveraged

I guess the players don’t mind Keefe?

  6. Forum_ryder74

Lol this franchise is such a joke. Honestly getting hard not to cheer for the demise of these losers now

  7. PapiMatthew

Looking more and more like Shanahan is the one that needs to go

  8. Gear4Vegito

Not bringing back Keefe was like my only true desire this offseason LOL.

  9. kingex11

Shanahan wants to keep the core four and the failing coach? Smh….MLSE should have fired him too.

Well at least we’ll know very quickly if the new GM is a Shanahan pawn or not.

I don’t see how you can watch that Florida series and be *happy* with Keefe.

Fucking amazing that we may only have fired the guy with the least to do with the actual on-ice performance of the roster.

  11. Corporal_Sauce

    This makes zero fuckin sense

I don’t understand how this guy has so much leash. He’s lost every coaching matchup in the playoffs every year. Bounced by Columbus, humiliated by Montreal, lost a close one to Tampa (still), barely won against Tampa this round, we had so many fortunate bounces.

Then he says he didn’t gameplan for Florida. This coach is not a serious person

  13. arvtovi

Sounds like Shanahan was cool with a general “run it back” mentality and Dubas really ended up just fumbling the bag with how he said one thing publicly and another thing in private

  14. whatlineisitanyway

So we are signing Holl to a $5mil X 8 contract this summer I guess.

  15. Krazier

Excellent, I think the solution to an underachieving player group and uninspired coaching is to fire our GM who is getting immediately hired by a large sports conglomerate. Clearly it was all the middle six and defensive depth that he brought in that was the problem. Welcome back to the dark years boys!

  16. Solace2010

Lol fuck Shanahan. If you’re firing Dubas you better be getting rid of keefe

  17. Sirrebral99

From a numbers standpoint, Keefe has been a good coach since his debut. I think he’s the got the best winning percentage for Leafs coaches in the beginning of their career or something like that? I know he’s done well league wide during regular season, but he’s been exposed in the playoffs (or more so, the team has been exposed as he has led them).

I’m not a big Keefe fan, I’d have liked to see an upgrade there but if the coach market is thin I understand. We’re also super behind on other teams interviewing coaches like CBJ, Rangers, and Flames and Captials already got two of the better options out there.

Maybe the team’s view point is that the systems and coaching aren’t the problem here, but players. Maybe they think Keefe coached decent enough but the execution or unwillingness to battle where he wants them to from players didn’t make the cut.

Also, gives the new GM an option to fire Keefe in January for a spark if the team underperforms. He won’t have that option if you pull the trigger now

  18. backstreets_93

Lol even the most passionate Dubas defenders like myself wanted Keefe gone.

If this is true it looks like it’s business as usual.

  19. TheSSMinnowJohnson

Hell. Keefe was the only change I wanted this offseason. Made hasn’t outcoached anyone. Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander and Justin Holl over and over again. This team man.

  20. Intelligent_Chair901

LOL this sub is going to have a melt down today.

  21. Far-Statement-8588

I was kinda hoping of getting the Hunter Brothers.. Dale is a good coach and Mark would have a clear vision. The only thing about this process I liked is change the team needs it.. if Dubas is the only change I don’t see any improvement

  22. Kinger15

I don’t hate it at all. It’s not like the Bruins or Canes are clamouring to fire their coaches.

And a new GM can always make a change during the season, like what the Blues did with Berube, if the need arises.

Keeping some continuity post-Dubas is also good in not rocking to the boat too much.

I’m interested to see what Treliving does in net, on D and with the bottom 6.

  23. RudeVegetable

Given the timelines this makes sense. Keep Keefe around as a sacrificial lamb for the first crisis instead of doing a late starting coaching search. The new GM will have plenty of business on their plate this summer without finding a coach from the coaching carousel leftovers.

  24. BackTo1975

Is anyone really surprised? The Leafs don’t want to eat contract anymore. Ever since Babcock, they don’t want to waste any money, so we’re getting these lame duck years like with Dubas and now with Keefe.

I also agree with the “should’ve fired Keefe a long time ago” take. But Shanahan and MLSE fucked up the Dubas situation so badly — lame duck year and then the debacle two weeks’ ago — that they’ve painted themselves into a corner on a head coach. Pretty tough to hire a new GM and make this call overnight, given the lack of top options out there and Keefe’s record.

Lot of ways for that to go south on the new GM. Safer to bring Keefe back and fire him if he hits a real rough patch in the regular season or they bow out early in the playoffs next year. Fire him now and hire someone else? If the team then craps out, the GM will wear that failure.

  25. micatola

TIL that no new GM has ever inherited a coach. /s
