  1. video would have done well to mention:

    * mclean's stacked pad save
    * canucks winning three OTs in a row to win round 1
    * capped off by bure's 2OT
    * mclean 52 saves in game 1
    * the goal switch at the end of game 6
    * "he'll play on crutches"
    * linden scoring 2 goals
    * nathan lafayette hitting the post late in the third, barely missing the tying goal

  2. Best Stanley cup final ever is either 2008 wings vs pens or 2004 lightning vs flames

  3. I am biased as I am a Penguins fan, but the 2008 and 2009 rematch were together one of the best stories in a long time for the NHL. Especially in a league with 30 teams at the time, it was really amazing to see and even more amazing that both won one cup. So while it's not a single series it is one of the more interesting stories of the modern era without even going into the specifics.

  4. YOu should include this incredible call by the Canucks announcer in the closing seconds in game 6

    HE WILL PLAY ON CRUTCHES !

    Trust me Look it up

  5. Kirk McLean was robbed of that Conn Smythe. No one was more valuable to their team in the playoffs. The rules say, "it is awarded annually to the most valuable player (MVP) of his team during the National Hockey League's (NHL) Stanley Cup playoffs." The Canucks don't make it out of Round 1 without Kirk and they get swept in the Finals without him.

    Stats aren't everything, but lets see how certain stats can help show why a player can have so much value. 1 guy stands out so much from the Reg Season performance that the entire team nearly win the cup after a bad season. This was done while performing worse in the playoffs on key stats as a team. Meanwhile the other Team did what they did all season, just a bit better than the Reg Season and won.

    Vancouver going into the playoffs, Finished 14th in NHL

    Record: 41-40-3 (85 points)

    Goals For: 279 (14th of 26), Goals Against: 276 (17th of 26)

    vs

    New York

    Goals For: 299 (4th of 26), Goals Against: 231 (3rd of 26)

    Record: 52-24-8 (112 points), Finished 1st in NHL

    That means the Canucks never had home ice advantage and the Rangers had it in every series they played. Its called Home Ice Advantage for a reason and the Canucks had a even record on the road in 93-94.

    Now, what is the biggest differences between the Regular Season and the Post Season? Who had the stacked team on both Defense and Offense?

    Kirk had 820 shots in the Playoffs (NHL Record at that time). Kirk had a average of 34.17 shots against a game in the Playoffs because the Canucks defense was worse in the post season. They only gave up 27.20 shots per game in the Reg. Season. New York had a average of 27.72 SA in the Reg Season. Richter had 27.09 shots against in a pre-trap era in the Playoffs. New York as a team only gave up 26.67 shots Per Game in the Playoffs, a slight improvement with 7.5 less shots against than Vancouver per game.

    The Stanley Cup Final total shots were 213 on Richter with 19 GA vs 247 Shots with Kirk with just 20 GA. That is 1 more win from 1 shot out of the extra 34 shots.

    The Canucks in the playoffs averaged 3.15 goals and 3.32 in the Reg. Season. Granted, its harder to score in the Playoffs, but only went down a tiny bit. New York had 3.55 goals per game in the Regular Season and 3.52 in the playoffs, nearly the same.

    The Goals Against is 2.75 Per Game in the Reg Season for New York and 2.17 in the Playoffs. Big jump, but the Canucks went from 3.29 GA in Reg Season to 2.29 GA with Kirk in net…it drops 1 full goal Per Game…remember this was while they were giving up 7.5 more shots per game.

    The team gives up 7.5 extra shots per game, has a winning record on the road in the playoffs, their goals against drops by 1 full goal, and the team scores slightly less than they did the regular season.

    The amount of success of the team is directly connected to Kirk McLean. He set the record for most playoff saves, shots against and minutes played. Brian Leetch had an amazing playoffs and was a great player. But Kirk was on probably the second greatest playoff run of all playoff goalies in NHL history.

  6. The 94 playoffs were wild.. I was 9 years old at the time and it for sure a big part of what made me obsessed with hockey

  7. First NHL finals I ever saw! What fun for a 12 year old Finnish kid -there was Tiki and Jyrki Lumme!

  8. I think 2009 was better. The fact that it was a rematch and the way it ended, it went all the way down to the wire. It was also the unofficial end of an era as the NHL was not the same after that season with the Red Wings reign ending and a lot of old players from the clutch & grab era retiring.

  9. 1984-85 finals isles vs oilers two dynasties facing off and the isles finally being dethroned
