I’m just glad we don’t need to trade assets to offload a contract. I’d say hold the cap space for now until the TDL and make a decision there about maybe even getting assets for retaining on someone

You know we traded a 1st and a 2nd not too long ago right? They didn’t buyout OEL and trade two high pucks to make rebuild moves now. They’re gonna make some shortsighted move to try squeak into the playoffs cause they think they can replicate Florida. Despite the fact Florida was a President Trophy team literally one year ago. They weren’t some mid team that had a hot goalie.
The team has needed to « take one step backwards to move two steps forwards » for a decade now but never do it (cough Aquilini). This is the draft to do it. The fanbase went full cringe mode when the team traded Horvat’s first round pick.
At this point and for a while now it feels like the fans in general are smarter than the millionaires actually running the team.
If they weaponized the cap space they would be able to sell that to the fans, easily. It would also take a little bit of pressure off of the players knowing a cup run is not what anyone expects of them yet. So ironically not « going for it » every single season might actually keep the team from faceplanting during the first ten games. Every season is a choke job and it needs to stop.
Let the players breath. Let the fans breath. Just take one season (or heaven forbid two seasons) to acquire some real hope… in the form of long term assets. It would be easier to sell that kind of hope more than what they’re selling now.
They could have weaponized the leverage they had in the OEL deal and bent the Coyotes over a barrel but that didn’t happen. This team’s management and owner wants playoffs so they’re gonna spend the money they opened up…..

I *could see* the Canucks following this line of thinking. Purposely suck for one more season and take on some expiring contracts while also letting Myers’ contract expire. Or signing cheap FAs that can be flipped at the deadline.
I don’t think it’s gonna happen though. More realistically, they’re going to try to compete this year, trade away Myers, trade away our 2024 first rounder, trade away one of our expensive wingers, and improve this team as soon as possible.
Never gonna happen. It’s full steam ahead into a just-miss-the-playoffs scenario or at best a 1st round exit after being swept.

That would be the smart thing to do. But this is Vancouver, and this organization never thinks about the long-term consequences. This is a team that only thinks about short-term gain and how to fix things quickly.
If they can find someone who can actually help us and get assets in the process that’s a no brainer.
I don’t see them taking on a problem contract to get picks if the player doesn’t fit the vision tho.
While I have more faith in this management group than the previous, we all know that they specifically aren’t gonna “weaponize capspace” that’s just like against the Canucks MO at this point for some reason. I expect extensions, some FA signings and trade, but absolutely no cap weaponizing in this household
I actually disagree. Use it on someone that will be a longer term piece either in the top 4 on defence or at 3C.
What I hope they don’t do with it is go sign someone like Barbashev that is going to get overpaid in FA after his cup run.

Ideally management plays this intelligently, doesn’t rush into a free agent signing and end up back where they started… I think we all have the fear though that they’re going big game hunting on July 1st and we’ll be in cap hell again by July 3rd.
Debrusk and Carlo are obvious candidates, as Boston has virtually no cap space with Swayman, Frederic, Bertuzzi, Hathaway, Clifton, and Orlov to re-sign.
What is even the point of writing articles about what the Canucks should do. They never do what they should do. It’s just shouting into the void at this point.

With our short term focused ownership/management group I fully expect the this cap space to be used on a longer shovel handle to keep making the hole deeper.

Oh god I’m getting ‘nam flashbacks from the last time the Canucks should « weaponize their cap space ». Instead, Benning/Aqua proceeded to sell the teams future up the fucking river for another 5 years and SOMEHOW the team is in cap hell despite having an atrocious roster
