Kostin was very close to signing with KHL Avangard Omsk – until DET deal today.
Now, his agent will talk with GM Yzerman, who should have no problem out-bidding Omsk, where Kostin likely would not make >$900K US.
Taxes better in Russia, but if DET wants Kostin they'll get him.— Mark Spector🇨🇦🇺🇦 (@SportsnetSpec) June 29, 2023

This is really good. Kostin adds a lot of toughness and grit and pretty decent production for a bottom line player. Something we sorely need. If we can get him relatively cheap for a couple years that’s a good get, especially since he is only 24. I like him a lot lot better than Yamamoto, who I honestly don’t really like as a player at all.
I look forward to seeing what he can do with us. In the Edmonton games I watched this year he has a hard, heavy shot that’s pretty accurate. I hope our system/coaching allows him to become good secondary scoring.
Sign him to a 1.5×3 deal.
Because we know how flexible yzerman is on contracts
Is there still some upside with this guy? His deployment in Edmonton made no sense until the playoffs, then he had a ton of success.
[Kailer Yamamoto Buyout Results – CapFriendly – NHL Salary Caps](https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/kailer-yamamoto)
AFter seeing the math, a buyout would take yamamotos 3.2 million cap hit and would just be 433k in year 1 and 533k in year 2. If stevie doesn’t want to use a roster spot on yamamot a buyout does seem very ideal. Savings would be over 2 million on a 3.2 million dollar contract
This is good news. I’m more excited about Kostin than I am about Yamamoto. Should be a more talented player in the role that Erne and Sundqvist helped fill.
Have we had a Russian since Datsyuk?
Lots of cap space and he won’t be *that* expensive. Love the pickup.
I live in Edmonton so its easier to keep tabs on the players here.
I’m not thrilled on Yamo, this is a hope different scenery is better and help get to the floor cap. He plays hard, aggressive with back/forecehck. Size is the issue with his play and gets hurt from it, he is extremely streaky and when hot can contribute, but really he’s a 7/8 forward.
I feel this deal is more about Klim, he is a poor-mans Barbashev that can play anywhere in the lineup and contribute physically and offensively. He’s a nonstop motor running type of player that really adds physicality more than anything. Edmonton struggled with this deployment during the regular season.
Hilarious side note that “taxes are better in Russia” lmfao. But on topic, I’m actually a big fan of Kostin. Liked him for Oilers.
