Odd that we didn’t keep him even for a stretch to see if there’s anything there. have to think he’s probably better than most of our bottom 6.
That seems odd. You think they’d wait and see how he looked at training camp at least? But what do I know
Why bail out Holland then?
You’d think we’d play it out with Yamamoto and see what happens. Better to let his contract expire in a year, maybe flip him for a pick at the deadline if everything went well.
Can someone please explain in simple terms why we did this?
I definitely get that kostin was the piece Steve wanted but you’d think we play out the season see if we could move him at the deadline 50% retained
So we took Yamamoto as a consolation for getting Kostin? Basically future considerations was “pay him to get out of Edmonton” ? Could this bite us down the road if Holland has some sort of contractual right to a ‘consideration’?
Obviously they think there are players in Free Agency that are better than him that they can get. Apparently Kostin was the real prize for erasing Yamamoto from Edmonton.
Am I crazy to think he was the better player between him and Kostin? Why not give him a shot, he played the entire year for the oilers, it’s not like he was a scratch player.
What does this mean for his cap hit overall? Saw that his cap hit was 3.1 this year I think? Does that change?
You can only have so many right wings, I guess this is good news for Zadina who probably would have lost minutes to Yamamoto
Fine by me if this means the Wings are going to pursue better players starting tomorrow in trades and free agency.
I feel like a lot of these moves are going to make sense in a few days when Yzerman makes a couple moves because as of right now it seems like he’s just kind of doing things for the sake of doing things. Don’t really know why they wouldn’t just give Kailer a shot unless he straight up said he wouldn’t play here.
Yamamoto is an 80 on nhl23 and Kostin is a 79. Makes no sense /s
Can’t say it makes sense to me to take on dead cap for a fringe bottom 6 player who was KHL bound a few days ago.
I know Yamamoto was necessary to take on to get Kostin but he only had one year left on his contract. Yzerman must really want to use that salary on a trade or free agency otherwise I’m not sure why you don’t just ride out this last season on his deal.
Yamamoto just doesn’t fit on the team. He isn’t a top 6 player. He isn’t going to score goals for us. He isn’t going to be a bottom 6 grinder without consistently getting hurt. Which is how his career has gone so far. The buy-out is super cheap, and it gives Yamamoto a chance to go to a team that will be a better fit for him. Over his career, he couldn’t make it work with McDavid or Drai. It isn’t going to work with Joe Veleno.
Kostin fits what we’re building, he may not be here when we’re contending. He also has an absolute rocket of a shot, with the right opportunities and some luck he could get 20 in the bottom 6. Don’t expect it but worse players have done it l
Yeah we definitely don’t need a proven NHL player taht peoduces on our roster. So much talent already STACKED on our team. /s

So whose spot were they worried Yamamoto would be roadblocking?
Might be a roster spot or contract slot thing?
Might also just be doing right by the guy if Yamamoto would’ve just been buried in the minors on the Wings and no NHL team was interested in him with his current cap hit. This way gets a chance to find a team willing to take him for a smaller cap hit and a chance to keep his NHL career alive. The buyout penalty is so small that doing Yamamoto a favor in this way doesn’t really hurt the Wings.
We couldn’t have just waived Yamamoto and sent him to GR? Wouldn’t be a bad depth player if injuries/poor play force us to call up forwards. Kinda tired of Taro Hirose.
This is similar to when we got Stall and a 2nd round pick from the Rangers for nothing a few years ago.
We have cap space and other teams don’t. So we can take on players to help other teams. In exchange for that we get something we want. NYR wanted cap space and Stall was taking it up, so they gave us a second round pick to take Stall. This time the Oilers are strapped for cash and Yzerman though KK would be a nice addition, so we got him and KY (as a cap clearing move for EDM) without giving anything up in return. This gives them a little bit of flexibility with resigning some guys and going after other free agents.
I mean, if that’s the cost to get Klim for free. I’m not too concerned. You could tell on the Day 2 interviews with Yzerman that he didn’t have much long term interest in Kailer.
Yzerman wants prototype players with strong mental attributes that lend well to a team environment.
Tight cap? Don’t we need to spend like 8 mil to reach the cap floor?
