Well Muzzin is on LTIR, so it’s no big deal to keep him. Murray I do agree needs to be dealt now. His 4+ mill cap hit is a Luxury we can’t afford and because of how the Sens structured his deal, we can’t even dump him off to a team like the Coyotes since he’s owed around 8 mill in cash.

That Murray trade was like a slow motion car crash with everyone here screaming no lol

    Very foreseeable outcome.

Technically you’re dealing Muzzin’s contract, not Muzzin. He and his wife and family are moving back to California next month so he’s definitely not playing again.

Not to worry. Pridham has this team’s back. As always.

There are teams that would take Muzzin’s LTIR for a couple different reasons but what reason would the Leafs have to not keep that themselves?

One reason for moving Muzzin is if he’s LTI the team cannot accrue deadline cap space to start the season. Ltir stops cap accrual. A rough figuring of how important this is would be an example of being 450k-500k under the cap all year equates to about 5m in deadline space over a season. At trade deadline that’s the equivalent of a 10 million dollar player. Give or take.

I’m not claiming to know it all. It’s impossible! I’ve learned that as much as I think I know, Brandon Pridham makes me realize every year that I don’t have a clue.

With that said if Muzzin laces up for one game (or maybe lacing up doesn’t matter) then goes on LTIR the team can exceed the cap by the difference of money of Muzzin’s contract minus how close they are to the cap ceiling before placing him on LTIR. If the team has $50 dollars of cap space when they place Muzzin on LTI they can spend over the cap to replace him with a player that makes $50 less than Muzzin.

Ok now a team like Arizona has been, in the past, willing to take on Muzzin to hit the cap floor. As much as you can’t go over (the ceiling) you also can’t be under (the floor). If I’m not mistaken this year it was set somewhere around 67 million. Floor 67m ceiling 83.5m. Tanking teams love guys that affect the cap but won’t play and win games. Chicago looks like the new Arizona. San Jose maybe?

Anyways thanks for putting my brain to work here. I’m trying to recollect and it’s always painful this time of year or moreso September.

Murray was healthy and ready to play in the playoffs so there is no reason to think he will be LTIR to start the season. And as I’ve explained about cap accrual there is no way the team wants that scenario. I also believe buying him out is a risk they’re not going to take unless they’re willing to risk some kind of tampering/ cap circumventing push back from the league.

My thinking for this is pretty simple. You could have bought out Murray and didn’t. You CAN have another opportunity to buy out IF any player goes to arbitration. Do the Toronto Maple Leafs KNOW Samsonov is going to arbitration? Is the reason we haven’t heard any news about Samsonov is because they’ve pushed and arbitration case?

Toronto: listen Sammy we want you and we’ll give you this fair deal but we think you could soak us for an extra million if you take us to arbitration. If we can’t move your direct competition for the starting job through trade we need a second buyout. So the net is yours if you take us to court.

    Sammy: get some smiles 😃

Sammy isn’t a starting goalie, showed that in Washington and I do not think Dubas’ intention was for him to be a starter. He obviously did better on the Leafs as they are the better team. His stats paint one picture but is play paints another. He lets huge rebounds go after he skates way out of the net. I can’t remember how many times I was yelling at the screen saying « get back in your net, the rebound you are about it give is a wide open goal » then it was. I think this showed a lot in the playoffs. I’m fine with resigning him as the backup but I would be fine trying out Woll too. Not sure what the plan is for a 1a goalie though and it scares me to think their plan is for that to be Sammy.
