  1. Hurricanes are doing great in the off season, hope they're not setting themselves up for failure after next year though. A lot of teams kinda screwed themselves over last season with their cap space trying to build a shiny star studded team. I'm also worried about the Hurricanes grit factor, they need to pick up a wrecking ball or eventually Aho and Necas might get hurt. What the Canes really need to work on, however, is the mindset of their scorers. There's no reason why Aho or Necas can't be top scorers in the NHL, the thing is that their lines are so solid that no individual feels the responsibility to drive the net and take those chances themselves. The Canes always stick around the outside, have D-men take slapshots and then the forwards look for the rebound on the sides. Aho and Necas can get into the slot and drive the net very skillfully, the system just doesn't have them do it.

My armchair coach lineup with the existing players would be put the Ds Slavin and Burns on the top line with Staal, Martinook, and Fast to win the puck battles and wear down the other team in their own zone, then put a line out with Aho, Necas, and Teraveinan to make the goalie have to work hard. Jordan Staal is a pro at tipping the puck into the net and a body that's hard to move out of the way, with Burns' slapshot it would be very frustrating for a team to counter. Then Aho, Necas, and Teraveinan out as a forward unit. Aho can skate circles around D-men, Necas is great at reading goalies, and Teraveinan knows how to pass the puck like a monster. Then I'd put Svetchnikov on the 4th line, he's fast, big, and got the skill to do it himself if the pressure is on his team, he can handle what other teams throw onto their 4th lines. I think the Hurricanes could really put a well skilled goon squad out for their 3rd line with Kotkaniemi, Puljujarvi, and MacEachern who all have size they can really throw around if they choose to. Along with the other D-men; Sjei, Pesce, Orlov, and Chatfield there can be some very painful units put against the other teams in the league. I'd probably put Bunting and Tarasenko with Svetchnikov but really there are a lot of great forwards to choose from with Drury, Jarvis, and Stastny who'd make a great lineup on their own. Not to mention all the various minor leaguers that made amazing fill ins during the playoff runs with so many injuries two years in a row.

I don't know what I'm talking about though, just my geeky Hockey fan coming out. The management has really given Brind'Amour a lot of great options to choose from, his system is great but I think he needs to take that system and use it as a foundation to build on to play towards his players strengths. He's got the defensive system down, just their forwards are having a lot of wasted potential with Aho's skill, Necas' skill, Svetchnikov's speed, Staal's size. There's no reason they couldn't have done with without even making these great pickups in the off season. I'd also like to see what they do with Tony DeAngelo, he really is a good player who I think has a lot of wasted potential. I'd like to see him made a winger tbh, but the Canes will probably use him as capital to trade for someone else since I'm sure a few teams wouldn't be able to say no to a skilled D man with a shitty attitude.
