Imagine how much better the free agency class looks, and how much more sense it would make, if they actually bring in the Cat to Detroit. I can't say I am losing faith in the trade, but that is only because I never believed he was making an active effort. But by golly, I hope he is!
They're waiting for the price for DeBrincat to drop to as low as possible. But they risk that Ottawa holds on to him, or trades him to another team. Yzerman is doing his job pretty well, but there's risk to the strategy for sure.

Fun fact: Yzerman and Tampa had two chances to draft DeBrincat in 2016: he drafted Brett Howden (solid depth forward but nothing special) and Libor Hajek (defensive defenseman who is basically out of the NHL now, not good at all). Swing and a miss for Tampa, also a swing and a miss for Detroit, who drafted Cholowski ahead of DeBrincat.

As a retired business owner, there were times when I'd simply walk away from a negotiation. Let the media pretend they know what to do. If they're wrong, who cares? All I can say is, if this is the Wings team they roll out for the season, I'll be watching another team. I want to watch winners. Not rebuilders. That's why I moved on to the Bolts years ago. You're either moving towards winning a Cup or I'm not watching the team.

Well looky here. Valenti using up some of his obligatory 6 hours annual coverage of the Wings. Oh, btw. Three hours after this broadcast DeBrincat is still listed on the Ottawa roster on Cap Friendly, perhaps a site that big V doesn't know about.
