Steve is right. These two idiots are taking the bait and ignoring the entire core root problem the leafs have. The core 4 take too much money away from the team. The leafs management is terrible at learning from past mistakes and terrified to take a big risk and drop one of the core 4 to build a deeper roster. That’s basically the anti Stanley cup mentality and they’re not going to win a cup until they move past the gretsky days and accept what almost the entirety of the rest of the league accepted 5 years ago.

Nylander is not worth his current salary and needs to be traded for the good of the team…the guy regularly has poor +/- numbers in relation to the team average and does not fight for the puck on a regular basis…

I have noticed a lot of the times that you don't seem to know or understand the NHL and ice hockey enough to give these advanced comments about s*it you really don't know! At least your co-hosts understand more which I appreciate and you should listen to what they say. Look, Nylander have so much more to give when compared to Marner and Matthews, whom both seems to have hit their skill-walls. Nylander just keeps getting better, faster, better defensively and shoots and passes better and better while at the same time reads the game better then anyone! Matthews seem to get worse and worse and Marner is so up and down it scares me quite a lot and he has almost stagnated skill-wise. SO the offense of the Toronto Maple Leaf's lives and DIES with William Nylander! That's a fact! I have watched every single game since I started watching them in the 2016 playoffs. He´s the only Toronto player that know how to and also drives the puck in to the offensive zone and then attacks the net! He has also been the most important player during their playoff runs when the other players seem to get too nervous to be able to play! Sadly, you(Steve Dangle) seem to be just another ungrateful bag of yesterdays hate/bullying-clothes with your hateful and stupid rhetoric against Nylander! He's worth at least 10mil if not 10.5 mil when you look at his NEXT level capabilities!
I don't get why Matthews is considered the Leafs bread and butter. They do just fine without him, and I'd argue the rest of the team recalibrates more evenly. That $13M would go a long way on this team.
I hope you loose Nylander! You´re not worthy of him! He goes to any other team and he´s a first line player from day 1 and will dominate even more then he already does when he's backed up by a team and coach that doesn't bad talk him to the press every other game since 2017! This is first grade mathematics. He has the best hands in the NHL, speed that matches Mcdavid, laser shot and passing skills like no other I have ever seen. Many times he even "see's the game" a lot faster then his teammates so they cant keep up with some of the best passes that he makes as they screw things up by taking bad turns or just straight up missing the puck! I hope Toronto looses William Nylander so he can get the cred he deserves from a team that doesn't bully him for not accepting a bad deal! 6.9 mil was a bad/cheap deal back THEN which time absolutely has shown and it was as we ALL know the cheapest deal for what skill they received from a player the last 20 years!!!
Buy out Tavares and put him on waivers.
Having one 40 goal season does not make you a 10 million dollar player. If this was his say 3rd season in a row getting 40+ goals and 80+ points, was solid defensively player. Nylander is an 8-8.5 million player max.
$13.5 mil is NOT a discount! Matthews is NOT the best player in the league. Nathan and McDavid signed long term for less. Why should Matthews make more then them? Best player(McDavid) & arguably 2nd best and won a cup (Mackinnon) are above matthews period. He should not make more then them. Matthews at $12.5 x 4 years max. Anything more is an OVER pay.
If Nylander has a 35 goal and 75 point season he gets less then 9 million as a free agent. He is a top out 75-80 player. Bad defensively and a winger. He is not a 10 million player. He won’t get 10 mill as a free agent and shouldn’t be paid that by the leafs.

Ok, so it's already established that Matthews is one of the top-10 players in the league, so why is he taking a heavy discount? McDavid took a bs discount years ago by leaving like $500k on the table and took $12.5mil per season about 5yrs ago. If you want a discount from Matthews, look for league maximum, and he'll take a 'discount' of $500k off that. Also, why would Nylander take less than $11mil? The other 'core 3' all got more than that per season…

Blow it up. Sign and trade them all. Toronto's core 4 is soft and overpaid thanks to Doofus the Goofus and his analytics. Gotta get something in return for these players without getting badly burned 🔥. Obviously, with Tavares, the Laffs will need to eat some contract but individually the Laffs should get reasonable returns on trading all the core 4 because the Laffs will be shipping out the best player in any trade and some other GM's – will be interested in such a deal. First of all, ask yourself what would the Black Hawks pay for having Matthews or Nylander playing with Bedard? Teams may not be interested in overpaying for all 4 Laff players, but paying a reasonable price for them individually, that's another question. Re-sign Matthews for Mackinnon type money 💰 on a shorter term contract and there is NO reason that the Blackhawks don't poney up at least a first round pick and two bonafide young NHLers with cap hits of $3-4 million each and attempt to trade Nylander to a team like the Ducks for a first round pick and at least one bonafied young NHL'er with a cap hit of $3-5 million. Then trade Marner to a offensively challenged team for a first round pick and a bonafied NHL'er at a cap hit of $4 – 7 million. Finally, trade Tavares near the trade deadline, to an interested team who may think that with Tavares they can make a Cup run, eat some of his contract and get at least a decent player in return or a high draft choice or a combination of both. The Laffs could come out of this Doofus inspired disaster with a much more competitive hockey club. The potential is there for that to happen. The possibilities are intriguing. A capable GM should be able to extract decent returns for those players by signing and trading Matthews first, then signing and trading Nylander next before the beginning of the season if possible and finally trading Marner and Tavares, freeing up cap space and at least getting something decent in return. There are definitely some NHL teams that could live with one of the Laffs 🍃 soft but talented core players in their lineup. The Laffs could come out of this mess looking pretty good. Treliving will definitely be the talk of the town and be able to quickly rebuild this team in his image.
The Leafs are "Team Overpay". Thanks to Dubas. And Jesse is right .. why should Nylander be the only one to take a discount. Nylander deserves to be paid 75% of Matthews. So if Matthews deserves 14M then Nylander deserves at least 10M.

When Ovechkin signed his mega-deal at the time in was it 2008 or 2009, I could of made the same argument as Steve has made in this video for Matthews. Ovechkin didn’t win a stanley cup until 12 YEARS later, and people forget that some stars got “the bag” before they got the cup.
