I like Lou Lamoriello's style
If they stay healthy, I think familiarity with the team as a whole will motivate this group. I expect them to challenge for tops in their division.
Isles fan here. Yeah they are done. For the preseason , season and post. They will just golf the whole way through.
I think this team’s ceiling is making the playoffs
They'll never make it past the 1st round until Lou is gone
I wanna see this vid re-uploaded in September and see who notices. I don't suspect Lou has any big moves cooking
When Landeskog wanted to score more goals he studied Lees play in front of goal and it helped him. Now they also have Horvat that also likes to score goals in a similar way. Islanders will score a lot of deflections and rebounds.
If this is your take on a team I DO follow I'm beginning to wonder if I should trust your takes on teams I DON'T follow.
The owners hiring of Lou as GM was the worst move ever for the Islanders, his old skoo washed up philosophy on building teams is OLD and this teams current stupid "I love you man" long contracts he gave have crippled the teams cap, to many old players and samo samos, horrid, also really without youth and terrible drafting other than Barzal and Dobson. Sad A F. I am an Islanders fan since the cup years, and Lou has got to go if this organization is ever going to get better and younger. Horvat was not the answer at $8.5m. Pulock and Pelich and the rest of the D are overrated. Shocked he dumped Bailey, who should have been gone 2-3 years ago. Martin, Clutterbuck, Cizikas washed up as well 2-3 years ago. Sorokin all good, but Varly 4 more years at that age and a ridiculous rate? Lou is senile. Lee, Palmieri and Pageau all down hill from here. Lou is nutz. The fans are better armchair GMs than Lou will ever be.
I understand the whole 'these players are playing in a defensive system so they have an excuse to not produce', but ultimately players are paid to produce points and not paid to say they could have produced points under a more offensive system. By the same argument, can't we say Sorokin should be paid less because his numbers are only good in the Isles system?
I recall Lou handing out bad contracts to aging veterans near the end in Jersey.
I really like the idea of a strong defensive minded team with an excellent goaltender and this can be great with the right coaching (strong forechecking leading to scoring chances – ‘23 Panthers) but I don’t know if the isles really do that on the offensive side because they have so many low scoring games even for their own sake
The Islanders are a meh team to me. You have Barzal, you have Horvat, but scoring seems to always be an issue for them. They also overpaid in both term and money to keep Mayfield (very slow d-man) and Engvall (bottom six guy). Their top 6 really lacks speed outside of the two stars I mentioned.
I'll easily pick Ottawa (better top 6, their defense is more dynamic, along with a new goalie), Buffalo (they can score goals like crazy and have Dahlin and Power) to make the playoffs over the Islanders.
If Bo and Barzal play together, Barzal needs to be the center. Maybe not for faceoffs, but after that they need to switch.
They didn’t need to change much. This team suffered from Murphy’s law last season, managed to still make the playoffs, and got beaten by the canes by bounces. I am still confident in this core, but Lane must be a better coach.
do they play hockey in great britain? and why do the britsh favor one province of Canadia? british columbia is obviously favored. they put british in the name. And how often does the king and queen courtez come to visit you.
I make super good points, but you never respond to me.
Both of the last two seasons, the Islanders looked good until a slew of injuries hit. Either the Isles’ bad luck runs out this year and they can make an actual run, or the injuries continue and the Isles have to ponder ripping the bandaid off and going rebuild a bit early.
Were closer to the end than the beginning! I give it a few more years and i think drastic changes will start to happen!
Anyone else here really miss Eberle 🙁 . Lou was crazy to protect clutterbuck over him in the expansion draft..
You cannot have Horvat and Lee on the same line. Lee is overrated and overpaid as the captain and less likely to be moved. Scoring from the defense (including PP) is killing them.
if it ain't broke…
Fix the powerplay
It is disappointing that the Islanders have not made any significant hockey trades in recent years. Lou and the company's lack of action can be seen as incompetence. Lou continues to express his belief in the current team despite their struggles to win games consistently. The team has weaknesses in areas such as their power play, lack of an offensive/puck-moving defenseman, and a pure goal scorer. As a fan of the Isles, it is frustrating to see the team struggle. It seems as though the front office is not prioritizing winning a cup.
The Islanders are interesting. I've never met a "casual" Islanders fan. The people I've met from Long Island are either all-in on them or they don't remember that they even exist.
I understood that the coaching change that the Islanders underwent last year happened in part to achieve a change in the team's style of play. Not so much??
Big Lou needs to go.
THG thank you for spending time talking about my isles. The day I have been waiting for, as for my boys well… they suck… it’s bad. I love the optimism here, if they actually play a more up tempo style but; They will NEVER EVER change that limiting structure, defense is all they care about. Barzal will never develop what he could be because of how they play. Sorokin will carry them to a far better record than they otherwise deserve. They are old, slow and have limited offensive upside. With all the competition in the East playoffs are impossible. So many other teams improving and the isles refusing to make any changes or adapt to the modern speed based game. If they do make the playoffs again…. We get axed In 6 games again.
As an isles fan. Lou has to make a big splash. Either a true pp1 quarterback defenseman or a true goal scoring winger. If available, my preference would be Kyle Connor for sure. We are a better team than we were at opening night last year, but at most we win 3-4 more games. I don’t see us as a playoff lock and this roster got man handled by a depleted canes team. We need more offense.
P.S the identity line is much better than the last name they had. The MC^2 line. It was painful to hear that nightly
Lee and Horvat serve the same role as in front guy. Need to move Lee down to 2nd and have Wahlstrom on 1st. Move Engvall to 3rd. Needs? Too old. Move Palmieri Clutterbuck and maybe Martin for picks or prospects.
They just signed Horvat and they aren’t given free money like the leafs. So let’s all relax about the DeBrincat bullshit.
Considering this team is basically identical to last season, I just want to see one thing: a league-average power play. I'm not even asking for it to be the best, I just want it to be ok. The Isles barely made it into the playoffs, but I think they would've comfortably had a spot (and maybe even been M3) if A) Pelech never got injured, and B) They had a league-average power play. I stg there was more of a chance the other team would get a SHG than the Isles scoring
Early last year they tried to open up the offensive and it was a disaster. Then the injuries hit, Pelech, Palmieri, Barzal, Clutterbuck, Wahlstrom all missed 20 or more games. Most non-Islander fans don't realize Pelech is the most important player on the roster. The Isles need to be close to, if not fully healthy to compete. If they are healthy, they can win and are built for the playoffs. Ten years ago, they had a lot of youth and were bad. I'd rather have men than boys.
At least Lou has changed the narrative regarding the cap issues…he is now laying the blame squarely on the doorstep of the leagues governing body stating that the contracts he has signed were the result of being sold a bill of goods. As for the current roster don't get attached to names like Wahlstrom, Salo, Pageau, and a few others…they might not be around for the whole season to come.
Parise and Bailey should sign PTOs. It's sad to think that Bailey may be done dirty that way. And I think this team scores more this year naturally. They have Barzal at wing for a full season, that alone will free him up from faceoffs and some defensive responsibility. Him and Horvat could Gel and really be ppg players. Maybe some shuffling moves Lee off the line freeing up Horvat to go to the net at times. I can imagine it taking off, or flopping.
