Spectators Look straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting

You can always tell a shot of an old crowd. Nobody has any team gear on. There just wasn’t that much of the stuff available…

I figured it was 70 or 71. I don’t remember the Sabres having a maskless goaltender. I only remember Gump Worsley and Andy Brown playing that way after 70…

Goalie wearing a headband to hold his face and head together if he takes a puck or (Gordie Howe’s stick!) to the face!

When did wearing jerseys, team shirts, etc start to become common place?

I also find it interesting just how dirty the ice surface seems.

The goalie is Joe Daley, the only Sabres netminder to go maskless. He was also the first Sabre as Punch Imlach claimed him off waivers shortly before drafting Gilbert Perreault. Daley backed up Roger Crozier for the Sabres inaugural season in 1970.

If it wasn’t for the clear logos on the sweaters you would think that it was AI generated.

Always surprises me that things like the boards are chewed up, and the nets are rusty and missing paint. This is the best league in the world… looks more like the rinks I played beer league in! Different times.

It’s kind of wild not seeing a single jersey in the crowd lol.

I’m old enough to have gone to games as a kid and seen Howe play.
I don’t know much about photography but I sure don’t remember how the arena at the time (probably Olympia) was that brightly lit that a camera would pick up all the people in the seats.

I didn’t know John McEnroe played for the Wings.
