I’m sure people will be perfectly rational about a player asking in arbitration for more than they are worth, and the team asking for less than what they are worth

I see twitter replies already trying to make a big deal of this.. The middle ground is in the 3M range which is exactly what we all said we can afford so not worried. Player selected, so there is a chance we get to choose 2 years term at 3-3.5 AAV which I am more than fine with.

Either he proves himself or buys time for Woll.

    Dear Arbitrator,

Do your thing and meet us in the middle at $3,650,000.

Anybody getting angry at either number doesn’t understand negotiations.

The player will go as high as possible and the team will go as low as possible, the arbitrator will meet somewhere in the middle.

This is not Ilya Samsonov saying he is a $4.9m goalie and refusing to sign a contract otherwise. You always go as high as you can to start.

    This will be fine.

My theory is he filed for arbitration as a favour to management. He’ll get paid because he opened the 2nd buyout period so they offload murray

Arbitration usually lands in the middle of the asks so most teams and players ask for the min and max.

I prefer the way baseball does arbitration (unless it changed) where ether Team and Player put in their asks and the arbitration chooses whichever one they deem to be most fair.

3.5 looks like a solid number. But let’s see

I’d bet the ruling comes in at 3.25 milly max and we sign him for 2 years. More likely 3×2

This is one of the few times I wouldn’t settle. Too good of a case against Sammy taking into account multiple years

…and the arbitrator, after lengthy deliberations and painstaking mathematics, hands out a contract for $3.65 million.

Pour out a scotch for a job well done.

I think we all really like Sammy and the way he kept his nose down in Round 1. Hopefully this will work out well for everyone 🙏🏻

I’d say he’s earned $3.5-4 so I don’t think his ask is that absurd but the Leafs lowball is beyond stupid, especially if this is just buying time until Woll is ready to be a starter next season. You’re not winning anything spending less than $4M on your goaltending tandem. It’s not the goalies fault this team overspent on forwards and should have never signed JT.
