Lidström contre Orr

https://puckprose.com/2023/08/05/best-nhl-defenseman-boston-bruins-orr-detroit-red-wings-lidstrom/#144317-comment-replies.

Bobby Orr is a legend but he was playing in the late 60’s through the 70’s. If the question is who would you put in for a game 7 final game, by the time the late 90’s/early 2000’s when Lidstrom peaked roll around, you’d want to pick the most average defenseman in the league over Orr. The game had just evolved in speed and skill level so much defensemen were just better.

If the question is who was most dominant/innovative/impactful in their era, you can have a discussion.

I mean, I understand orr is absolutely insane, but I would take the best shutdown defenseman ever 10 times out of 10.

Lindstrom basically let you have 4 dedicated forwards if you want because there was no odd man rush against him.

And then he just kept getting better.

I hate this question. Lidstrom 100%. I feel like people never consider the fact that Orr played in the 60’s and 70’s when it comes up. It was a different time, lol.

Bobby Orr revolutionized the position. Lidstrom perfected it.

These arguments are always silly, but Bobby Orr is the best dman of all time, full stop.

I grew up and was at the age in ’69 to know the hockey. I loved Orr. No question. His knees did not allow him to reach his full potential and let’s be honest, it was a different game. I take Lidstrom every time…But in my heart of hearts, Vladdie was my guy. Lidstrom was a genius. Vladdie was a genius who would take your head off. Fearless, smart, and offensive minded as well. We were so lucky to have witnessed that fleeting magic.

I find these kinds of discussions interesting, but ultimately there is no singular best. They played in different eras and their individual skills and approaches to the game were quite different. Both are all time greats that were a pleasure to watch.

Lidstrom is my favorite if all time. It’s Orr, but I’m fucking sick of people saying whose second, fuck that. It’s between Lidstrom vs Orr, the third is Borque, no question.

Way I look at it, you can pick Lidstrom, who will backstop a dynasty for two decades, or you can pick Orr who will be the dynasty, but for just under a decade.

Both will win you cups. Depends on what you value more, longevity and a lengthy prime, or outright dominance for a shorter period of time. I don’t see a wrong answer here.

I’ll start by saying I love Lidstrom and think he was an underrated D that would have been even better in today’s era. I’ll also say the difference between Orr and #2 vs. Lidstrom and #2 Orr takes it. He was so far ahead of his time. Lidstrom was perfect but not revolutionary
