Did The Sharks Really Get "Fleeced"?
I'm a sharks fan and I think the trade helps us in so many ways specifically money
Honestly if anything the sharks fleeced the teams they got pieces from
Sharks would've gotten more if they were willing to retain more of karlssons cap hit
got robbed ? they got rid of a 10+ million contract ( after u figure on what they retain) hes goinf to be 37 making 11.5 M ..Got a decent d man who is a stay at home d man. 2 years let @ 2.75M fair contract …. Granlund 2 years left at 5M the money had to be moved to make the trade work.. He will be moved I think at the deadline if he can regain any production.. Hoffman one year to UFA status…. SJ just freed up some serious cash.. Now almost 5M below cap plus an estimated 52M in cap space for next season as it stands right now… They can buy themselves a contender lol… They realized in the end a 1st rounder was the key to the trade and the rest was short term salary dumps from the trade partner.. Only way to male it work.. BIG PICTURE they got rid of 10M for the next 4 years…
Bringing up the injury is kind of irrelevant, he just now recovered from it, now look at his production. He could put up similar numbers by the time he’s 36.
It's sort of a win for all 3 teams. Montreal was the biggest winner, followed by Sharks and Pens in a dead heat.
Pens got their guy and a depth forward plus one pick, Sharks got rid of EK's contract without retaining much, a first round pick, serviceable players on shorter deals they can flip at the deadline and a prospect.
If Sharks were ready to retain 30-50% of the money, they would have had much more interest and most likely better offers futures and prospectswise. But they gotta have a roster on the ice plus it doesn't hurt to be able to shield your top prospects from having to take up too big of a role too early.
Looks to me like SJ got what they wanted – rid of an albatross of a contract and creating more clarity for their rebuild.
Bro everyone relax he had a career year and it’s the most games he played in 5 years 2nd most is 56 yikes
I can see it both ways but i think that realistically their hands were tied because of the cap situation so the fact that they didn't retain much of that contract is a win in itself. If we talk asset it's not great but on the other side of the coin alot of teams had to pay to get rid of a contract in the last 3years. What SJ really won in that trade is that they won't have to wait an extra 4years to start rebuilding and planning for the future.
All three teams got what they needed. Good for all 3 all around.
You can’t be that clueless. How much did Grier pay you to spout this diarrhea?
In 2 years Pens trade him and a 2nd round to Phoenix or what ever other team is willing to eat cap for some picks.
They are launching the tanks and they need the cap space and futures.
Also Karlsson might just age into an abyss.
it was a fascinating trade and the Pens somehow managed to save 3M in cap space in it, insane
Fans said Ottawa lost in the EK trade after that happened
Look at the Sharks stats since acquiring Karlsson. They got worse….A LOT WORSE. The guy is a lousy defender and take a ton of injuries and sucks up cap. The Norris no longer means what it's intended to when a defenseman is -26 and awarded best d-man. Why not just sign a forward to play defense? IMO, the Sharks wanted out of the Karlsson nightmare.
solid analysis, couldn’t have said it better
The Pens are taking a huge risk thinking that Karlsson can repeat what he did last season and stay healthy all year and be productive for all 4 years of the contract. Meanwhile, they Sharks got a GUARANTEED 10 million dollars off of their books for 4 years, which they can use to build their team or take the contracts of other teams for assets in their rebuild. If I were a betting man, I'd argue that the Sharks will be a lot happier in for 4 years than the Pens will be.
yeah anyone saying san jose got fleeced is seriously over valuing karlsson. You are 100% right about this trade happening based off last season and he's more likely to regress than come within 30 points of that this year or any year from here on out. There is a very decent chance that he could get hurt this year and if that had happened in san jose they would have gotten nothing. It was now or never
I think this is an exaggeration also an overvaluation of EK. This is a guy that’s had one contract worthy season in last 5 with 4 more years of 10m.
SJ took on bad contracts that will expire in 2 years and will be out of them while Pittsburgh is on the hook for 4 more. They also got a 1st which maybe decent. I don’t see Pittsburgh much more then a bubble team. Not to mention EK could be missing his typical 25-30 games
@JohnnyHawkey THANK YOU! Man people do not realize how much it means to a rebuild to have depth veterans to mentor and insulate. You said it perfectly.
It's astonishing how many people jumped on this as a bad trade. Crosby and Karlsson go way back, pens might squeeze out a year or two of good competitive play if their supporting cast is in order, their revenue off having 4 huge names in Crosby, Malkin, Letang and now Karlsson is gonna be great either way… SJS get a couple guys they can flip at the deadline, a 1st round pick and when they flip those guys they can even take on another bad contract for more. Then Habs are just chilling, they got cap space, maybe they can flip Petry at the TDL or maybe he helps out their d core if they do compete more than expected this year. I'm a flames fan and I know pens' consolation prize was potentially hanifin but this deal just made so much more sense for everyone.
The sharks fans are gutted. 😂
Dubas loves old players who are too expensive.
If you ignore them getting rid of him from their books yes… however saving 12 mil a year almost is always good haha and they only retained what…. 1.5 mil? That’s nothing comparatively
Why it might look "bad" for SJ is the choice they made to eat contracts in exchange for retaining a smaller %. If they retain more they probably get more picks/a prospect. But then they're stuck with tons of dead money for 4 years.
Instead they took on bad contracts which they have a chance to move in 5 or 6 months time. Even if they end up only getting low picks, say a 7th, a 5th and a 3rd, for Grandlund Rutta and Hoffman well that would make this trade look a lot better for them, no? And heck they'll probably get better picks than that if the market is right at the deadline.
Finally someone with the sense of reality here! I totally agree on this!
When you consider Karlsson had one good season in the last 5 years-the Sharks did well. And don’t forget he is a defensive liability.Grier did very well indeed.
yes they got fleeced. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon. they needed prospects and high picks. Mike grier hasn't gotten any value back from any depths pieces at the trade deadline. bonino/nieto/reimer,etc. Karlsson just had a rebound year and the narrative is that he's gonna decline and STRUGGLE to put up 50 points based on how many people talk about his current abilities. You also don't even mention the sharks gave back a former 2ndrd prospect and a 3rd in the trade. Those 3 new players have to fetch a 2nd/3rd just to break even on that front. Something also not really discussed, is he makes the team enjoyable to watch. Puts fans in seats and whatever decline he may have will also be offset by the fact that the cap will jump big next year plus teams would also be the on the hook for 3 years, making his contract more manageable/less risky. Also lost a retention slot for 4 years for just eating 1.5per. Every potential positive of the trade comes with a negative qualifier. 1) Got rid of a huge contract, but have to retain salary. 2) Got a 1st rd pic, but it's top 10 protected. 3) Got 3 players to flip later, but down a 2nd/3rd already. Also…. if grier doesn't do anything with that cap space than that's more value wasted. With this scorched earth trade, is he going to buy a bad contract from a team for picks with the new free cap space? This move doesn't move you closer to any goal. They already have to wait out vlasic's terrible contract.
Only because it's top 10 protected. I would of liked to see a star on the team but they don't need to head on that direction yet
Bro has Malkin Crosby and maybe Letang he’s gonna have a good season
Grier is playing the long game. We may not be good this year or next year. But we will be a contender for the cup in the years to come.
Dude had 101 points at 32 years old wtf does being 33 years old have to do with anything😂😂
decline? wtf are you talking about, he had a career point high last season. He's back from the decline.
By getting Karlsson off their books is a success for San Jose.
how does the Norris only get you that
This guys a plug -103 Move him to the right wing already.
I think the habs were the winners of this trade
