I agree that it's disappointing we only got a 1st, but Pittsburgh had a bottom 5 prospect pool in the league prior to drafting Yager. If he was off limits then I won't be sad that the Sharks didn't retain more to get more.
Poulin, Smith, etc. aren't knocking down the door of the NHL right now. Even with Pickering, he doesn't project as a top pair guy, and there's some redundancy with other Sharks prospects like Thrun or Mukh.
Is it possible that we're still in the Willie Nylander sweepstakes without such a big trade piece as EK65? If he walks end of this year, after a decent Stanley Cup run… the Leafs cannot pay him $10 mil… I believe some team bold enough to pay that freight, it could be worth it.
Damn
Not happy the pick is top 10 lottery protected
I agree that it’s silly to use a salary retention slot for less than $2mil. Doesn’t make much sense
I’ll 100% stand by, no chance before 4 years. The top of our D is still not on the team imo. The top of our forward core is still 2,3 pieces away at least and much experience needed on both ends. Hate free agency. Rarely a true team changer is available. Free agency is best for rounding out the bottom of your line up. Not the top. Barring you want to throw money away on other teams cast offs. Rare do you get a pananin talent and age show in free agency. This team will be built through draft and if lucky some great trades ala Wilson 2005 ish time frame. No franchise changing trade, it’ll be the draft.
I’m ok with the trade. Not road I would of gone but there’s easy understanding to the reasoning. I personally think there taking the right route. Invest in drafting, they did. Take a few shots that can turn into future assets, done that. Continue the slow dismantle and reassembly. We want another long term success over short term run.
I'm a little bie more on the side of Keegan personally. Yea maybe we could have gotten an additional pick or assets, but without real competition for Karlsson, the penguins had enough leverage to lower the price there. At the end of the day, we got what we needed the most. Cap space earlier than anticipated.
Also, one thing to keep in mind imo is that GMMG is not done this offseason. We still have too many fowards at the moment. 14 there and that's not even including Bord which could still make the team potentially. I guess it will be interesting to see what are Grier's next moves
Considering what SJ gave up to acquire Karlsson, this trade is a massive loss.
The players acquired are all overpaid and it's going to be very difficult to get any return on those players without retaining salary. Their stat lines are not likely to improve on this Sharks team. Now the Sharks only have one retention slot available for the next two years and Karlsson's won't be available for another two years after that. Sharks get a 1st but have to give up a 3rd and a prospect to get it and its likely going to be a late 1st… This move makes no sense to me.
The only possible virtue is if the Sharks were desperate to get out from under the contract but… why? I understand why Karlsson was desperate for a move but what are the Sharks going to do with that extra cap space in the next 4 years? Sign a bunch of UFA's? This is isn't an attractive destination right now so you're not signing guys who want to win and you're probably overpaying for whoever you do get (which is normally how UFA's work). This is how teams wind up in hockey purgatory where you're constantly drafting 10th to 16th.
This trade moves the Sharks further, not closer to competing.
Didn't Sheng Peng just write an article suggesting mutual contract termination? Wow that idea is even worse than last year when he floated the idea of signing PK Subban. Sorry for being brutally candid but Sheng, I think you should consider a different career path.
