  1. This is the first team previewed that was significantly unlucky last season, winning 35 games when GF/GA indicated 39. That said, 39 wins still probably isn't a playoff team, especially when the main guys are looking at filling out AARP applications.

  2. 1% Deep playoff runs since 1998 … And anyone dares to dream this organization has the heart to even make the playoffs? 🥱

  3. 2-3 more years of keeping the gang together as Ovechkin goes for the goal record, and try to win without spending any draft capital. Then sell of Strome and players his age if they accrue some value by then and hit the depths. They are very nicely set up for a proper tank. There's usually a couple of stars in their prime that gets stuck in between the generations, that are simply too good to just trade away (like Pastrnak and McAvoy in Boston). But Washington doesn't have any issues like that so they shouldn't have any problems bottoming out completely and get to pick in the top3 for several years.

  4. Here’s the small window Washington got for the playoffs :

Pacioretty is back and healthy, plays nearly all season, as good as he can be …. now copy paste that to

Wilson, Carlson, Backstrom, Mantha, Oshie … everyone

Also at least 50 goals for Ovechkin, and Kuemper needs to steal a few games here and there.

Finally, some depth must come up from the farm, because making moves while not sure to make the playoffs can easily backfire.

  5. The Washington Capitals' reason for existence for the next few seasons is to get Ovi to the goal record. They're in desperate need of a rebuild, but can they do that while Ovi is still with the team?

  6. They were injured and are hoping for tons of players to bounce back. However, a lot of them are on the wrong side of 30. Embrace a retool and maybe Ovi gets one more chance at a cup and breaks the goal recod. 6th in the Metro. 78-83 points.

  7. The biggest question is how can they trade a guy who scored 12 goals in 81 games with a minus 26 +/- rating and has a 7.8 million cap hit?

The Capitals got "unlucky" with injuries last year, but when you've got such an old team, that's so much more likely to occur. And they're still a very old team. They made some good moves in getting Sandin and drafting Leonard and Cristall, but they've got to deal with a bunch of overpaid injury prone older players, and they just committed to Wilson being their overpaid injury prone older player in a few years once the existing overpaid injury prone old players' contracts are finished.

They have a good farm system, but the older core and their bad contracts (especially Kuznetsov) is holding them back.

I think they'll be better than Pittsburgh this year, but that might not be enough for the playoffs.

They don't need to do a rebuild – they have a very good farm system, and enough guys that are ready to step in and take the place of the aging core already. They just need to get out from under all of the contracts for their overpaid aging players (like Kuznetsov, Oshie, Backstrom, Carlson, Wilson, Matha, etc.), and they'd be a better team – a playoff caliber team. If they could find other teams foolish enough to take on the full cap hits of those contracts, and they could then use that cap space to improve the team, they'd be in fantastic shape. But what team would want to take on Mantha or Kuznetsov and take 100% of the cap hit?

  8. in a recent interview Kuzy said that he's playing a line of four players all the time (that's a shot at Ovi I guess). This is impacting his scoring for sure. Last season his game declned severly after the trade of Orlov who is his good friend. Knowing that your team is selling at the deadline must be demotivating I guess. I can see his desire being traded as he's still elite center, I'm pretty sure he could be first line center in teams like Detroit or Winnipeg

  9. My brother got to brag about how good his team was during Ovi and Backstrom’s prime, now I get to brag about my team making the playoffs. Washington has fallen hard.

  10. The team ain't playing for no cups. They're easily playing to get Ovi that record (and fair play to them it is a massive deal)

Then it's full on root to branch rebuilding

  11. It felt like last season Washington were playing homage to some of the worst seasons in the 90s when it came to the number of injuries on the team. This season is going to come down to how many Capitals players were broken and how many are broken down. If they suffer only a normal amount of injuries for a NHL team, they should be right back in the playoff picture. If they nail down a 4th place finish in their division, whoever plays them will have their hands full; especially if the Capitals find a way to add the right pieces at the deadline.

  12. It's going to be hard for the Caps to get back over the playoff line, especially if Buffalo, Ottawa and/or Detroit start moving up, as expected.

  13. We are truly a mystery team. Could be anywhere from 70 points to 90. Caps are entirely dependent on "If's". They could be great IF Backstrom and Wilson return to form after a full off-season and training camp. IF Kuznetsov and Mantha are motivated under a new coach. IF Oshie and Carlson can stay healthy. IF Pacioretty can regain form coming off injury. IF Strome and Milano can replicate their career seasons. IF Sandin can take a big step forward. IF Ovi's body doesn't break down. Nothing is set in stone for this team and it's making this season really interesting because truly anything could happen.

  14. Why are people even trying to predict where they place? They’re such a wildcard; we just have to wait and see. They’ve replaced an atrocious coach with an unproven one, they had 4 key players miss significant time, and they’ve added another injury-riddled star in Pacioretty (perhaps a bizarre move given their preexisting issues but it’s a gamble that could pay off hugely). We also don’t know whether the small post-deadline sample size is indicative of the kind of production they’ll get from Sandin. If so, absolutely massive.

  15. I think the Caps can reliably take 4/5 place, just miss the playoffs, trade off Kuzy and or Mantha and bet on the season agter the upcoming one. Ome thing i will say, i think Ovi would be more happy with another cup than the scorong record. There was the play where he passed Howe for all time goals and if you watch it, he passed it off to Kuzy, he didnt want to score a hostory books goal on an empty net. Hes a VERY competitive man, and he wants to win.

  16. Signing Wilson to an extension was asinine, this team is trending down, should be flipping assets for picks and prospects.

  17. Caps contracts that expire in 2 years: Mantha (1 year), Kuzy, Backstrom and Oshie. Ride out the storm and 2 years from now all the cap room in the world. Plus, some promising prospects will have matured.

  18. I predict 85 to 95 points. Key players had alot if time to heal injuries. They'll be playoff bound just watch.

  19. Even if healthy, and I feel the same way about the Pens, goaltending and team defense is going to have to carry them heavily. There's some old bones out there in a league that's getting faster

  20. End of a era team, like Pittsburg but with no obsession to make a run for the cup. are they a top 16 NHL team? probably not. are they playoff bound? unlikely.
they are old, their best years are behind them and they will likely run it back in 24-25. Most of their core are due in 2025 so let's enjoy it until then.
    The rebuild is coming.

  21. It seems that all the Caps fans have succumb to the notion that we’re in an inevitable decline. The team is structured around Ovi, and our likelihood for injury is higher than our likelihood of success. Yes the facts and trends support that pessimism, but I’m here to tell you, WE’RE NOT GONNA BE SUCK THIS YEAR!

  22. I think they'll be better than last season since everyone is technically healthy but will still have to fight for a playoff spot. If Ovi stays healthy he'll probably reach 40 but I'm guessing closer to 35. I think Backstrom will be in and out of the lineup as much as Oshie is. I just hope Wilson plays well and stays healthy.

  23. I personally think Caps sneak into the playoffs. The team was ravaged by injuries last season, that very easily could happen again given the age of many of the key contributors but I’m cautiously optimistic that they surprise everyone this year
