  1. Once Tavares contract is up, Leafs will be okay for cap. Nylander will most certainly get traded this season. Especially with Marner needing a contract next season

  2. Matthews continuous to be vastly overpaid and he refuses to sigh an 8 year deal.

  3. MacKinnon won a cup. No Cup for Leafs as they will never be able to afford true roster depth.

  4. I'm not mad at Matthews for taking 4 and betting on himself , ppl forget that he is betting on himself here and he's gonna retire a leaf regardless. And hey if he declines the 4 years looks even better. These 7 and 8 year contracts are tricky sometimes and you get a Tavares situation.. so think about it from that perspective. I'm fkn pumped!!! 4 years wooohooo!! Actually 5 with this year .. and then he retires a leaf and the whole retire the jersey and build the statue and 2 cups at least book it!

  5. Is matthews really worth mcdavid money tho he can’t break a game like mcdavid sorry but he isn’t on mcdavid’s level

  6. Obviously I wanted the Leafs to resign Matthews. He’s proven he can be the best goal scorer in the league, so you always want a guy like that on your team. I’m also really looking forward to seeing him potentially play with Bertuzzi and Marner (that line could be nasty). Maybe a little overpayment, but I’m more focused on those 4 years starting next season. Good to have him for the rest of his prime, and I’m also glad we signed him earlier rather then later. You know the longer this dragged out, the more tension there would be. All in all glad that’s over with, now he can just focusing on playing and bounce back from last year in the goal department.

  7. Should of signed Mathews for two years. Leafs commit themselves to an under achiever in the playoffs. Next up will be Nylander , Marner and Tavares retiring as a leaf. Expect the same poor results this season. Hail the fluff four !

  8. regular season STAR …. and playoff FLOP …. no killer instinct like a Dougie Glimour
    …. it's not how many 5 on 5 regular season goals u score …. it's what's in your DNA
Leafs don't win …. until they have a KILLER defense

  9. Long term money for a short term deal. That is how you bend an entire franchise over. No other way around it, or any way of sugar coating it. Max money, short term. Those are not good facts.

  10. He can still ask for a trade when his current contract expires. Nobody would blame him either.

  11. Now I'm looking for an Elias Lindholm extension next… Hope to have Hanifin traded and Backlund, Lindholm either signed or traded before puck drop game 1.

  12. I can see a maybe for Nylander taking under 10, but barely under 10. As for Marner, don't expect him to take anything under 12.5. Sorry, the cap is going up, and he is one of the best setup guys in the league. Teams will throw money his way. Marner is more valuable to the leafs than Nylander.

  13. Matthews had leverage. I've been hearing for 3 years that Dubas f*cked up, just knuckled under to Matthews & Marner, giving them 'whatever they wanted'. Really not true whatsoever given they play in Ontario, in Canada with a more punitive tax structure. Rantanen, a RW & the closest comp to Marner, also signed for 6 yrs, NOT 8 as an RFA coming out of his ELC. He's at 9.25M aav which given US federal tax & Colorado, with a 4.4% flat rate state income tax, is basically even with Marner playing in TO, at 10.9M in after tax net dollars. That is why star Ontario based players are paid at least a million more per year than most US based players to offset the tax disadvantage. Amazing how many Leaf 'fans' are clueless about that key metric. Matthews agreed to a reasonable number & the Leafs have their star centre for 5 more years before he becomes a UFA once again. Fair deal to me, as he is undoubtedly an elite player.

  14. Don’t like the deal. I would’ve rather they signed two or 3 25-30 goal guys with the same money. When you look at the last few cups , Mackinnon making 6, makar making 8 , stamkos 8 mil, Eichel 10 mil ( first 10 mil guy on a cup winner). Still glad he’s back though… hopefully they can continue to get deals like bertuzzi, domi, guys who take discounts to okay with Matthews/ Marner.

  15. Congrats on the Matthews extension to you and the rest of Leafs Nation, John. As for Nylander, I would love to see him here in SoCal if a deal were to get done.
