You say they have 30 million in cap space but just Marner and Nylander alone in the next 2 offseasons will cost 23 million. This is not even telling us that you lose 2 of your top 4 defensemen which will make up close to another 10 mill in FA signing. So you are already spending roughly 20 million for Nylander and 2 solid defensemen bc lets be honest is there any real threat in the pipeline to challenge for top 4 D minutes. Probably not. Bertuzzi is going to want 7m/7-8years at least, Domi might play himself into a 5 million contract.
Basically the Leafs need a lot of wishful thinking to come true to keep the group together until Tavares is off the books.

Lot of money, the term could have been longer, now he can still do another deal while still in his prime. I think that now the pressure is on Mathews,,not so much on the stats, but on being a real leader, when you are the highest paid player in the league you need to do more than than just score, you need to bring the intangibles to the team.Glad is done though,now move on to Nylander and get that sorted.
