I put Caufield at 1 myself but that may be a goal scoring bias. I love Suzuki and his vision. Great choice as number 1 and great captain.

We can say a lot of things of DG Bergevin, but this was a really good trade. Do not miss Pacioretty

As much as I love Nick, if hes our best player, we need a shit ton of depth to be able to contend. Hopefully a lot of our prospects hit and we become a Vegas-esque team

  4. > There is a not-insignificant sect of the fanbase that has wondered about the possibility of separating Caufield and Suzuki, and placing the American instead on the wing of Kirby Dach. This idea is at the very least worth some exploration, but the expectation as camp approaches is that the pair will be reunited to start the season. If they start slow, the calls for them to be separated could pick up steam quickly.

    Hey, that’s me! I’m that not-insignificant sect!

My logic is simple: Suzuki gets the top defensive assignments, and Caufield gets easily bogged down in his zone. At the same time, Suzuki also get the top offensive assignments, and Caufield gets mauled by top defensive defensemen.

So split them up and force the opposition to chose who to prioritize defending between Suzuki and Caufield, and allow the other to face a lower opposition.

Also: Dach can draw more coverage than Nick because he’s a bigger guy with better wheels. While Suzuki works inside his coverage, Dach moves his coverage around. More coverage running after Dach = more space opening for Cole.

Also #2: Suzuki’s production was better with RHP on his LW than with Caufield. 37 pts in 46 games with Cole (0.80 ppg). 28 pts in 32 games with RHP (0.875). So maybe Nick produces more when he doesn’t always look to pass to Cole, or maybe he just has better chemistry with RHP, but it warrants investigation and trying them on different lines.
