1. You guys are Forgetting that the 8 year McKinnon deal will most likely age TERRIBLY….given his constant injury history….the Avs will be stuck after year 4 of it. PLUS, how many 7-8 year contracts have aged horribly and the teams are scrambling to retain half and trade the guy. The Matthews deal protects against that. Get it together fellas.

  2. Obviously the AAV isn't great – but given how he has been a bit up and down and that his playoff performances are definitely not that great….Getting him till essentially 31 is just fine with me.

As we've found out with JT – those early to mid 30s portions of those contracts can anchor a team's movement fast. We get him for the rest of his prime. Its a good hedge against his potential decline once gets on the wrong side of 30. In fact, if he doesn't get a massive payday when he starts the following season at age 31, it'll be a good example to players to take more money and term earlier in their deals and you might see teams shift to shorter term deal when players are mid to late 20s.

And if, by some miracle, we win in the next 5 years, who cares about all of this anyways.

This is a win for Treliving – lets be happy Dubas isn't paying him 15M for 3 years or 14.5M over 5.

  3. Bunkis is literally the most rational leaf fan. He states how it is, period.

  4. How he can sit there in a negotiation and say he's worth more than McDavid is mind-boggling. He got HALF of the points. He made no concession on AAV, and definitely no concession on terms. All these leafs with the ME FIRST mentality means the team is never going to win a thing. Can't surround the team with a supporting cast.

  5. Do people realize JT is coming off the books very shortly? Leafs can resign him for cheap and are going to get a big cap boost. This isn't a bad deal at all. Obviously could be better but people are acting like he took 15 mil for 1 year lol

  6. Term is good, favours Leafs, who wants to be stuck with someone at that price over 30 years old, well done Tree!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. The team has the money to sign and pay them what ever they can afford
but in cap world, there will be no room for rest of team building

Matthews couldn’t get things going in play off, he can’t put the team on his back
    neither does Tavares

at least Willy show up in play off

  8. Career playoff stats for Matthews 215 shots 10.2 shooting % in 50 games played. Good for the Leafs. Hope the new guys like Domi, Bertuzzi and Reaves can give him more space to shoot the puck. If he is a playoff bust next year there are no excuses.

  9. I like the term. Let’s be honest if they haven’t won anything by the time he’s 31, Marner will be 32 and Nylander 33 then it’s time to blow it up. You won’t be able to move a 30 year old player making 13 million dollars.

  10. Nylander to play where his dad did…Calgary Flames. He will not be a Leaf and now what does Marner get?

  11. There is zero reason to dump on this. Good on him. Who are you clowns? Jealous?
Be glad that the man stayed in this town even though people like you guys always dump on the guy.

  12. These guys deff watch Matt and Shane’s secret podcast based on their sense of humor

  13. Why is it SOOOO important that we have Matthews locked up for 8 years?? It's such a common talking point, but the kid's not 21 any longer. 4 years takes him over 31 y/o, and then, we re-assess. How is this a bad thing? The team might be rebuilding, the team might not need a player who may/may not be producing 80-100pnt seasons year after year anymore, and at 13.25M$? 4 years is just fine, I think we should be happy we have him locked down for the prime years of his career

  14. I would look at this positively. Imagine signing Tavares for four years and not seven? How do you feel about that contract then? Its always the back half of the eight year deal that teams tend to regret. Auston's wrists will definitely be an issue in the coming four years and certainly on his next term contract. The leafs bought the best years of this players career and this signing extends the window to compete for another four years. Be happy with four years and the reduced risk.

  15. He is worth 15mill+ dont negotiate with this guy… give him whatever he wants. He did us a solid for signing right now…. just saying

  16. To anyone who thinks that the term is bad, I got Three Words for you all: “Kovalchuck Contract History”

  17. He doesn't OWE us 8 years… drop this "8 Year" term crap already. This dude is like an horrible Leaf fan who, no matter what, cannot be 100% satisfied. Just be happy he signed and we get to enjoy the show for 5 more years.

  18. Should be happy because he could have walked away next year but instead is locked up for next four. Elite athletes have the right to try to maximize their earnings. I think you will see this model used more in the NHL. He is also taking a risk. If he has an injury that prevents him from playing for a extended period of time like Muzzin or Landeskog the team is not on hook for the money.

  19. Players do NOT like playing in Canada and REALLY do NOT like playing in Toronto…… that's what we're up against

  20. I still haven't heard a compelling argument on how a max term deal for Matthews is good for either party.

  21. I have zero issue with the contract, I think you guys just like to complain about everything…You wonder why people hate Leafs fans.

  22. You two are ridiculous. 👎🏽 👎🏽
    Shaddup, please 🙏🏽
Very convenient that Murray went on ltir 🤔 🙄
The Leafs get too much attention over a bad team. 🌭

  23. Playoff points per game;

    Matthews 0.88

    Makar 1.07

    Kucherov 1.13

    MacKinnon 1.30

    McDavid 1.53

    Draisaitl 1.57
    Leaf fans got ripped off

  24. so you sign a 4 year deal, kinda’ locked him up; you could not let matthews play out the season and prove he’s 7 @ 12, (only thing left on the table is the stanely cup, boys)

  25. What’s not to get when you’re one of the best players in the league you get what you ask, leafs fans are so frustrating just enjoy watching the best player to ever play for your team and be glad he stays there at all with all the bs and noise coming from the fans I’d be out as soon as possible if I were him. People are different some don’t want to commit a full decade of their life at a time to one place.

  27. I agree Mathew’s technically only had 1 superstar season and this might help leads if proven he’s not that guy

  28. Listen… tired of all you guys talking about Mylander is a proven Play off performer…..geeez…just go back and watch the first two games of Florida series……WN engagement was a joke. Even from Mexico where I live I can see it….come on boys

  29. Oh man…. Horrified that its almost sept and the summer is essentially over, but seeing convos like this make me feel slightly better about it. GLG

  30. yyea that nylander interview was freaking painful and infurating to listen too. the way he talks makes my freaking blood boil. nylander literally sounds like hes on xanex. what fckin chode, id hate to have a teammate who talks like that good god

  31. Matthews would have signed for 15 million with many other teams. Be happy for what you have, or he may be gone before this deal is over

  32. Leafs players are OVERPAID and never held accountable for playoff loses!! Why wouldn't players re-up here?
