The suspense is killing me
My god, are we ever going to get an official statement about this or are we just going to “he said, she said” our way all the way to preseason?
If Babcock actually made players uncomfortable and the NHLPA makes a statement like that, I’m NGL everybody gotta go. Coaches, front office, just total clear out at this point. This was already a bad hire and it’s blowing up in their faces before we’ve even gotten to camp.
Weirded out or refusing to play for Babcock?
I agree it’s kinda weird, but I would move on with life. Is Russo saying this is a dealbreaker for players? That they are broken emotionally now? What is the context here?
Babcock should have never, ever been hired. He’s one of the most abusive coaches in NHL history, and what this means for players is that they’re always going to be questioning his intent and there will be a lot of trust issues. That’s not great for forming a healthy coach-player relationship.
I was mostly indifferent about the Babs hire, but when you hire someone with his reputation and history, this type of borderline weird stuff is what you can expect to bubble up to the surface. It’s his history that will make situations like this that would probably be nothing-burgers elsewhere a big deal here. It’s exactly the risk JD and Jarmo took!

This is a hot take but…this just makes our players come off as soft and weak if all they were asked is if they could show Babcock some photos of their families and life outside of hockey. If he grabbed their phones and scrolled through them then that’s one thing. But if it’s how it has been described then we have some of the softest players in the league. You really feel “absolutely weirded out” by someone trying to understand you better as a person outside of hockey? Like what am I even reading right now lol
This just sounds like a new zoomer player unfamiliar with life and social cues while also wanting to feel cool sharing information with podcasts. The nhlpa went to columbus to get the information but the player is probably sitting in Michigan right now.
