  1. Given that a 36, and potentially, 40 team NHL is all but a guarantee on the horizon, I think Atlanta is going to return alongside many of the cities you just mentioned. Specifically Quebec because Atlanta is a lock for the Metro, while Quebec is a lock for the Atlantic, so it makes sense balance-wise. Remember, Atlanta only failed because of bad ownership. People love to forget that Atlanta was so bad, that they only made the playoffs once and got swept. Nobody, unless they're a masochist, would willingly subject themselves to level of torture. Not even traditional markets do. Blackhawks fans weren't showing up until they drafted Kane and Toews, but God forbid a non-traditional market does the same thing, then they're "fake fans." And Atlanta was never even at the bottom of attendance either. Give Atlanta a team that's actually good enough to win a playoff game, and they will thrive. We're talking about one of North America's most rabid sports cities here. Name another city that sell out a 75k seat NFL stadium for MLS.

  2. Somebody in Quebec must have done Bettman dirty to traumatize him to the point that he will literally consider anywhere else other than Quebec.

Bring back the Nordiques for a Colorado Avalanche vs Quebec Nordiques showdown! Reminds me of the final fight scene in Warrior. Sakic telling Goulet, "We don't have to do this" as he pummels him into submission while Bettman shouts from the background screaming, "FINISH HIM!" Sakic stares back at Marcel Aubut giving him a regretful look of selling the franchise lol.

  3. I'd love to see Atlanta get a feanchise – it'll mean another Canadian team in a few years based on previous experience 🙂 (Calgary, Winnipeg) – so this time Quebec? Hamilton? 🙂

  4. Couldn’t agree more. Hockey is a Canadian sport and I believe having my Canadian teams in the league we do the country alot of good, so the idea of a Quebec or Hamilton team I would love

  5. The Canadian dollar sucks compared to the American dollar. It’s the economy, stupid.

  6. I don’t know why a third go in Atlanta would surprise anyone given the Yotes are on like their sixth try in Arizona…

  7. Its pretty easy to find cities that will successfully support an NHL team. Is it near a relatively large city where the population of the metro area is 70%+ white and not somewhere that's obsessed with football?

If yes, an NHL team will do fine.

  8. A team in Quebec City or Hamilton or even Halifax will always be more popular with the sort of fans who are dedicated enough to post comments here. But the NHL doesn't care. For the NHL to be more than a niche league, they need more people watching on TV. They need bigger TV contracts. This can only occur by expanding to cities like Houston and Atlanta, and gambling that they can grow the fanbases there. If it is not possible, then, in the future, the NHL must accept its fate as a league beloved by a small but very dedicated group of fans.
I live in LA. If hockey can succeed here, then it can succeed in Houston. It depends on how you define success. I mean, we are a Dodgers and Lakers town, and hockey is followed by a comparatively tiny group of devotees. No amount of Stanley Cups is going to change that. It is always the same problem–except for Toronto and Montreal, hockey is loved in places with fewer people, while more populated places tend to treat it like a stepchild.
If the NHL doesn't grow the TV viewership, they are limited in revenue to the people parking their rear ends in the seats. If the NHL has ambitions to compete with the big three North American sports, that's not enough. Should they try or not?

  9. I think the NHL thinks they're confident because of the gold knights winning the Stanley Cup already and the Kraken eliminating the avalanche and I bet like 20 years ago. The MLB didn't think that they were gonna keep the Braves in Atlanta. But Atlanta, has grown to even have a successful MLS franchise, so it is worth the test may be areas like Houston however Dallas Stars considers them self Texas teams like the Blue Jays do to Canada and then you have Quebec city which you need to get the NHL
more time Atlanta has growing a lot of hockey fans in recent years. It looks like Atlanta's about to have a success boom that's why the NHL is trying to reopen market because it's experiencing a technological boom. It's becoming a top city like Shanghai, London, Paris, Frankfurt Moscow, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston cities like those Atlanta has become thus it is worth the try for the success of the last two expansion franchises and Atlantas technological and economic boom

  10. fa-git-about it! NHL is not coming to Hamilton. Betman honestly believes NHL is short for Not Hamilton League.

  11. You got my thumbs up when you said Atlanta was the ex who keeps screwing them over. Good line!

  12. I would love to see Austin get a team, or San Antonio. Houston has a team for every sport but hockey, San Antonio has the spurs and nothing else, and Austin has MLS which doesn’t count because no one watches it. Maybe I’m just being selfish because I’m close to Austin and want professional hockey 30 minutes down the road but give Texas more teams. Texas is bigger than like 1/3 of Europe, it’ll take more than one team to service the whole state

  13. Atlanta could work if it's managed well. The metro are has a population nearing 7 million people.
However, I agree with you that there are cities that will definitely have a more stable hockey fan base.

  14. I agree that Atlanta would be a mistake. It would be a bigger mistake to put a team in Portland.

  15. I knew it! Only Bettman!
A hockey team playing on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico would be better than a third team in Atlanta.

  16. Bring a team to Saskatoon, they'll love the Coyotes. We have to make the Dale Hunter dream come true.

  17. One hurdle that could come fast enough to prevent a team in Quebec City is the lack of broadcasters. Quebec is a French speaking province and currently has two channels dedicated to sports.

The first one is RDS, a reliable one that has been around since 1989. Starting somewhere around 2003, they got the rights to all Canadiens games in French and even with some slightly lousy analysts, they do have a great product overall. They were cruising until a second channel arrived with TVA Sports.

TVA Sports belongs to Quebecor, the same company that owns Vidéotron, as in "Centre Vidéotron", the arena built for NHL hockey in Quebec City. And it's been clear from the start that this channel relied heavily on a return of the Nordiques to strive. In the mid 2010's, they paid a FORTUNE to get national rights to Habs games from RDS, as well as exclusive rights to the playoffs, ASG, outdoor games and such. But RDS was able to keep the majority of Habs games, which made it a tough sell for the average sports fan to pay each month for TVA Sports.

A big problem with TVA Sports getting only national games was that all of those games were also broadcasted for free on the state-owned CBC. Hell, as a Canadian, I can stream all the games on CBC for free on my laptop from their website. Sure, the games are broadcasted in English, but if it means you can watch them at no aditional cost, people won't care much. I've even heard of people who would simultaneously watch CBC on mute and have the game on the radio in French. It doesn't help that the team working the games at TVA Sports is far worse than the one at RDS.

As of now, TVA Sports is bleeding money. It got to the point where it impacted hundreds of jobs at Quebecor in their newspapers and TV news departments this Winter because they needed to do cuts somewhere to save face. I think I read the other day that without TVA Sports, the media division of Quebecor was actually breaking even, but they lose millions every year as of now. It's only a matter of time before it's gone. And once it is gone, it's hard to imagine adding a second team in the Quebec TV market without a second possible broadcaster.

  18. "[Gary Bettman] is not willing to sell his Arizona Coyotes shrine in order to get a team in Atlanta, so he's still being realistic".

    – Johnny Hawkey, 2023… That is quite the quote of all time!

  19. Bettman is more likely to move the Leafs to Atlanta than to allow another franchise to exist in a location where the majority of the population watches hockey.

  20. Johnny is at it again, whining about Atlanta, crying over Quebec City being overlooked, etc., etc.
Johnny spends too much time and effort whining about his pet peeve perceived injustices.
Then Johnny flails at Bettman as if it is Bettman who decides who gets a team all by himself.
    Total nonsense.
Jeremy Jacobs does not want a team in Quebec City. Jacobs owns the Bruins and his viewpoint is the one that counts. Not yours, Johnny.
The Spirit Group drove the Thrashers into the ground and kicked them out of the Phillips Arena. That is not the fault of the Atlanta hockey fans, something Johnny's poor research fails to mention.
Forget Quebec, Hamilton, Halifax, Salt Lake City, Portland.
Not happening. SLC and Portland are small NBA markets. The Canadian cities do not have the population, local economies, corporate presence, or the wealth that Greater Atlanta has.
Can't change that by whining, Johnny.
Due to the impending collapse of the RSNs in the USA and the financial losses incurred due to Covid, expansion will happen.
Rogers overpaid for the current NHL rights and a team in Quebec does not help this at all.
Hoston and Atlanta are near mortal locks for the next two expansion teams. Too big, too much money to pass up.
The Patriots, Jets and Ravens are the third NFL teams in their cities.
The Islanders are the third NHL franchise in the NYC area.
The Nationals are the third MLB team in Washington.
Money matters more than emotion. You come off whining like a Trumpian. Please stop. Use logic and reason like a grown man. Realize that money drives sports, not the emotions of YouTube contributors.
Understand that the NHL owners on both sides of the border really do not care about Quebec, not the American teams, and most likely not the Canadian teams, either.
