DeSmith could actually be an okay backup if Silovs isn’t ready off the rip. No retained salary and not losing a second rounder means a W in my opinion.

I’m too lazy to do the math, but DeSmith’s cap hit was about $1.8m so it looks like the Canucks barely shedded enough cap to be cap compliant. I want to know by how much, though.
Having a legit backup probably helps the teams stability and makes sure Demmer can actually have a night off

This is a huge W you get rid of a guy in Pearson who we moved past lets be honest and you get yourselves a good backup goalie on the cheap to give demko some games off and you save money at the cost of a 2025 3rd well done

I’m a fan. The fancy stats people (and me) love Casey DeSmith. Seems like a great 1B option to take a load off of Demko. Not sure what we’re going to do with Martin, Tolopilo, Silovs, and Sawchenko.

Nitpicky sad that we lost another asset we could’ve traded for immediate help next year when we hopefully were better, but trade is pretty alright objectively. They didn’t expect pearson to be ready, wish we could move beauvillier for a mid pick instead but seems teams are still too cap strapped so can’t complain.

Shored up a position of organizational weakness (legit veteran backup goalie). They traded from a position of strength (winger).
And they cleared up enough cap-space they should be able to be involved in the waiver wire.
So Montreal could flip Pearson at the deadline for another 3rd round pick
I hope Pearson had some input on this, I feel like the organization owes him that much after completely mishandling his injury.

This is the reverse of what we were all fearing lol. DeSmith gets a new home which is good for him though I wonder if that means they have zero confidence in Martin. Alternatively DeSmith now gets packaged as a « sweetener » to rid them of Garland or Myers.

I like this. Demko, DeSmith, and Silovs is a solid trio, and although we had to give up another pick, it was only a 3rd, and it gives us enough cap space to be compliant with Podz and Hogz. And now we’re not forced to move guys like Myers or Garland, which will likely cost a lot more than a 3rd.

I dont know much about DeSmith so can’t really comment in it except to say we desperately need more NHL-ready goalies after last year.

I’m shocked they actually moved the right player and the trade itself was good. I wasn’t a fan of Pearson’s game but I hope things go well with his new team.
After messing around a bit with Capfriendly, the most cap-heavy roster that is remotely conceivably possible has Di Giuseppe in the AHL with Raty, McDonough and Podkolzin all on the NHL roster, along with Hirose at 3rd pairing LD and Cole McWard as the 7th defenseman. So 14F 7D 2G. That comes out to $31,666 in cap space.
Obviously it’s likely there will be at least some further roster moves before opening day, but this shows that no matter who they end up going with based on who is currently on the team, this roster is now under the cap.
(Note: you could get over the cap by demoting Dakota Joshua in favour of Nils Aman, but that just seems incredibly unlikely)
As a person, I do not like Casey DeSmith, as he has done some vile things, but through the « on ice results » lenses I see this as a good move.
It’s only a matter of time before this market chews him up for his past.
