to think one of Brian Burke's colleagues wanted to physically fight him during his draft interview for the Flames…
Eakins made him play Second Base, too.
Yakupov was an absolute joke. He couldn't play in any league.
Nail the narcissist 😅
1) he's just isn't that good.
2) playing on a bad team was going to be even more difficult when you're a Muslim that doesn't drink or speak english in Edmonton.
He wasn't that great but he was definitely thrown to the wolves.
"Fail for Nail" became "Nail for fail"
Nyeff-te-himik.
At the NHL level, the "Coach" doesn't teach you, they direct you to their system. YOU put in the work required.
Baby Nail asking for hand outs but not stepping up to the work ethic required.
… And so it takes a man to be accountable. Period.
Keep in mind that if it wasn't for Eakins, whom GM Craig MacTavish hired, the Oilers wouldn't be in a position to win the McDic draft, of which they did. Mac T, the genius. He doesn't get enough credit, that killer! I love him!
so what's his excuse in russia?
Sure be mad at eakins because he was a subpar coach…. but Nail didn't WANT to go to the ahl to improve his game and style of play. He said he would goto the Khl if the Oilers tried and It was Yakupov's inability to play the game in any way other then skating in straight lines that made him unplayable and he absolutely EARNED his plus/minus status
I agree Eakins is a poor coach. but Yak is a punk
Hmm, I wonder if he knows anything about personal accountability? 🤔
I can understand that he like many other kids drafted 1st overall get super high expectations thrust upon them and can often be thrown to the wolves so to speak, but he had other opportunities at different times in his career. Simply put he wasn't able to cut it, he wasn't as good as he was scouted to be, and he wasn't able to improve his game significantly enough to fill a lesser role nor did he adjust his playstyle to fit into any system he was in. He can blame whoever he wants and even be partially right, but I think taking accountability would've probably helped him and its sad to hear that even after years past he's not matured enough to at least see that.
I remember Craig Button on TSN saying that Yakupov's hockey sense was an issue and that it was overlooked during his draft year. That probably could explain why he struggled defensively and why his scoring never got better after his rookie year.
