    > It is still early in the preseason, but if you were hoping for a young forward to kick the door down and make the opening night roster, nothing I saw in Traverse City would indicate anything trending in that direction. Carter Mazur of course was hurt in the prospect tournament. Marco Kasper looks like he’ll need some time in the AHL. I still think Jonatan Berggren should make the NHL roster, after playing 67 games for Detroit last season, but I can’t say I’ve been wowed by him this weekend either.

    > Of the younger, fringe-NHL cohort, the best performer up here would have to be Elmer Söderblom, who had a goal and an assist in the Red and White game (the goal coming at three-on-three but on an impressive shot). And if asked for a young player who could give the front office something to think about over the next three weeks, he would have to be the answer for me.

    > Detroit still wants to see more growth from Söderblom away from the puck, but it’s hard to ignore the dimensions he has — which is why he made the opening night roster last season. The roster is deeper this time around, and the veterans ahead of him are going to be tough to pass. But whether it’s as a first call-up or for an opening night spot, Söderblom will give himself a shot if he can keep up his Traverse City play in the preseason.

As he said a lot of time still but that kinda stinks. I always love young guys forcing their way up the chart.
