W deal, was worried it would be longer term at 5.5 mil but this is honestly a great deal, especially considering he will be our captain

2 years is perfect. People forget because he has aged like a fine wine and had a career year last year. But Backlund is 34.

This is a really smart move by the Flames, they have some youth coming but nothing up the middle. Suddenly Lindholm has just a touch less leverage.

Sweet 5.5 was definitely too much on a 3 year contact if you take a step back from your home bias
To a certain extent, this takes a little of the pressure off of Conroy to sign Lindholm assuming Backlund continues to play well. If we lost Backlund and Lindholm at the same time we would have a major problem down the middle that couldn’t be addressed through trade or free agency. We would obviously want to keep Lindholm, but Conroy might be able to replace him (to some extent) if he had to.

I don’t know how many of you remember how explosive Backlund became when he first got the « A » back way then from someone being injured… he is a player built on confidence, and has not slowed down at all. I expect a huge season from him, maybe even a little over PPG.

2 x $4.5M for Backs is a very good deal for both parties. He’s still got a few good years left in him, and leaves us with cap flexibility when it comes time to resign guys like Coronato, Ruzicka, and Pelts when their rookie deals are up.
Backlund should of been captain last year. A lot of drama this pre season but im glad he’s got the deal done. Seems like he will be a lifer with the flames, glad he got his C!
